This review is dedicated to Jonetta whose love for audiobooks inspired me and helped me persevere when I would have otherwise given up.

She is a brilliant blogger and reviewer. Her posts are varied. Check her out here

I chose this audiobook as I was recommended Imogen Church as the narrator.

Lizzie Riley, newly divorced from husband, had procured the admission for her son Tom in a new school which had fences and padlocks and parents not albeing allowed inside. Tom started coming home covered in bruises. What was happening in that school?

My first book by author Suzy K Quinn, the story was a slow start with POV of different characters. Being an audiobook, I had nothing visually anchoring me to the read. So it was a slower journey to complete the book.

The plot line gave me Izzie, her mother, and social worker Kate’s POV, along with different timelines. Imogen’s voice followed the author’s plot to a T with different expressions and inflections in the tone to make me feel as if I were a part of the story.

I couldn’t guess the ending, it was unexpected. I didn’t have time to come up with my own theories as I was busy training my brain to just listen to the voice. My niggles too popped up. The story was very slow, and the voice sound kept increasing and decreasing in different chapters so I kept scrambling to increase and decrease the volume. Not sure if the quality of the audiobook was bad.

Overall, for my first audiobook, I had a fun time with it. Quite enjoyable.

I downloaded an audiobook from an online retail, and this is my journey into its pages, straight from the heart!! STRICTLY HONEST AND UNBIASED.

School should have been the safest place…

For Lizzie Riley, switching her six-year-old son Tom to the local academy school marks a fresh start, post-divorce. With its excellent reputation, Lizzie knows it’ll be a safe space away from home.

But there’s something strange happening at school. Parents are forbidden from entering the grounds, and there are bars across the classroom windows.

Why is Tom coming home exhausted, unable to remember his day? What are the strange marks on his arm? And why do the children seem afraid to talk?

Lizzie is descending into every parent’s worst nightmare: her little boy is in danger. But will she be able to protect him before it’s too late?

    1. You are amazing!! I love your reviews. Sometimes we just don’t realize when we affect someone’s lives. For me, it was you who was there in my mind when I wanted to give up.

    1. Yes. I just got the Audible subscription. But I would he able to hear 20min every night so that would make it a long read…
1 credit per month would work well for me

  1. I love your nod to Jonetta. Imogen Church is a great narrator, so that was a great choice. I am glad you enjoyed it. It does take “training” to really get into audiobooks, but there is such a great payback once you really begin to enjoy them. They will never stop me from reading physical books though. Great review, too bad it was a bit slow.

  2. Great review, Shalini, and welcome to audiobooks altho I’m sorry you had problems with the volumn. I’ve had a few like that. My only problem is the lack of the ability to make notes.

    1. Ooh my only problem is they work as a lullaby… I sleep within ten minutes so the next day I am rewinding and listening again. It is slow going

  3. Love this review too, Shalini! Hope you had a nice weekend, and a good start into the new week. By the way, you are reviewing much more faster, than my new ocr scanner is working out my document archive. Lol Terrible fantastic! Michael
