My review
Another great mystery-police procedural by author D. K. Hood. It took me some time to start liking the story as the initial chapters described how the paedophiles lured, kidnapped, and abused 13/14 year old children for years and killed them. That turned my stomach upside down.
Once the team of detectives from the Black Rock Falls Sheriff’s department Jenna and Kane make their appearance along with ME Wolfe and Rowley, the story flows like a murder mystery, albeit the murders of these abusers by a Vigilante killer.
I was supporting the Vigilante more in this book!!
A good hard hitting story by author D. K. Hood, the story, flow, pace, characters are great. The police procedural works well with autopsy findings and forensics.
But I couldn’t really get into the story as the topic was gruesome, and I was told about the abusers’ part of the story too, their plans, their kidnappings, holding children in cages… Eeeeuuu I could just cry here😢😭
The investigation and the characters captured by attention, the Vigilante made me root for her, hence the 4 star rating!!
I received an ARC from NetGalley and publisher Bookouture, and this is my honest and unbiased opinion.
My rating : 4 stars
Book blurb
The body of Amos Price lies in a pool of blood on the polished floor of an otherwise empty house in the small town of Black Rock Falls. With no signs of a break in, and no clues left at the scene, Detective Jenna Alton is at a loss.
But as the team begins to unpick the life of the reclusive victim, they discover a disturbing link between Amos and the disappearance of several young girls in the county going back years.
Days later, Ely Dorsey’s body is found in a remote motel on the outskirts of town. Jenna fears not only that the murders are connected to the missing girls, but that the killer hasn’t finished yet.
As Jenna tries to work out who will be next, the killer suddenly starts sending her deputy, David Kane, messages. Is she being taunted? Or does the murderer want to be caught? And will Jenna discover who’s behind these killings before more people die?

Hmmm. Your review has me on the fence, Shalini, as I love a good vigilante (Steohen Amell is amazing in Arrow) but I have a hard time stomaching any type of violence toward children. Should I or shouldn’t I?
Don’t… Not for you… I had my stomach twirling and hurling the whole time because what the abusers do is shown to us… I had to force myself to forget it.
Arrow is a different vigilante not this… Not for you… You have children, don’t read. I have asked the publishers to at least write a trigger warning.
Thanks for the warning. Reader beware. How is your Sunday going? I’m working through the final edits on Healer today (thanks for your feedback–very helpful). I’m leaving you another testimony on Goodreads today. 🙂
Really? You are such a darling. With your review on Goodreads my post will come up in the list. I am allowed to post only once a month. So my post is like so far down. Hehehe ♥️💜 all my live to you
Good. I hope they move your post to the top. You deserve it! 🙂
It did, thank you so much for your fabulous kind words
I’ll have to check out this series!

I might sit this one out, even though it sounds like a great read. I have a bad habit of letting these types of things stay with me for a long time. But great review!
Same here. I read a lot of cute books after this just to escape and delete the mental pics. I even asked the publisher to place a trigger warning in the book jacket.
Yikes – I don’t think I can handle this one, I don’t want those images in my gray matter!
I understand. I also had to read fun books to delete those images actively
Wow. I feel very intrigued and uncertain at the same time. This book’s sounds really great, and usually I can stomach these things, but I’m not sure I want these images in my head after reading it… I think this is going to be a mood reading for me. Definitely not for times when I’m emotional or stuff…
Same here. I didn’t know this book would have so much description. I had to read a lot of fun cute books to delete the mental images. I actively don’t think about this book
Terrific review Shalini! This sounds so good but I’m not sure I could get through it.
This should come with a trigger warning. I had to read cute books after this to forget this book
😒
No idea why you were in spam. Thank you so much. This had some tough issues
Oh yeah… I would totally be supporting the vigilante! But yeah… this one wouldn’t be for me. Another great review my dear.
This one shocked me too. I read a cute books after this to delete mental pics
Understandable!!
Go vigilante!! 👍👍 I’m all for rooting for the vigilante, especially since the alternative sounds super gruesome! I always have a hard time with things involving children. 😕
Same here had to read many cute books after that
Yep, I’m totally with you on this one. I didn’t want them searching for the vigilante at all since there wouldn’t be a need for one if the cops had done their job to begin with.
True that… I had nightmares with some of the descriptions. I wish they had told me in the blurb or hinted at it
Ah yes, I do remember thinking that too and went back and double checked the blurb. I have a habit of forgetting what I’ve picked up sometimes too and being surprised when I start reading.
True this needed a bit of a warning
Not sure if I could take this one, Shalini. It might make me 😡.
Same here… I had to read so many cute fun books to delete the mental pic.
I had asked author about no trigger warning. She said she just wanted to warn everyone of danger of net. Sighhh
😔
How you doing? It has been ages since I spoke with you
