My review

Much ado about nothing — this says it all about this book. I never thought I would ever get to the end, and I am so glad I got to it without a DNF.

I generally like Kerry Wilkinson books, but in the recent times, the level of intrigue in his prose is going way down. Giving in to popular style of writing, a main character who is a total ditsy with disjointed way of talking and thinking, I was pretty much bored with her thoughts throughout the book… And she thinks and thinks and thinks.

Rose finds herself in the middle of the field, in the middle of night, with a loss in memory and blood on the bonnet and windshield —sounds good, right? And that’s where the interesting part ends.

Rose is a detached main character, who is selfish in most ways, except she probably loves her daughter, Olivia. When Olivia’s boyfriend Tyler disappears, I thought there would be something happening.

But nothing much really happens in the book, author Kerry Wilkinson has tried to make the ending climatic, but it is easy to guess who has planned everything because throughout the book Rose tells us about people she has wronged.

Rosie is selfish who has only hurt people, yet she seems to sail through life, stalking colleagues on Facebook, her marriage to Dan is ending (probably due to sheer boredom) her relationship with daughter is barely hanging on, her commitment to work and attitude is lackluster. Her entire personality is as dull as a faded wallpaper.

When the villain of the story says that she only thinks about herself, I agreed with her. Even to the very end, she didn’t confess her crimes to the police. I couldn’t connect with her, by the end of the book, I was glad to get rid of her.

I received an ARC from NetGalley and publisher Bookouture, and this is my honest and unbiased opinion.

My rating : 2 stars

About the Author

Book blurb

Rose Denton wakes up in her car. She has no memory of how she got there. But she knows something bad happened…

There’s blood on the windscreen and bonnet – but it’s not hers and there’s no sign of anything or anyone she might have hit. The last thing she remembers is being in a hotel on a business trip but now she’s miles away.

Back home and her daughter’s boyfriend is missing. The last thing he did was argue with Rose over money. He left no note, no text, no clue as to his whereabouts.

What happened last night? And, perhaps more importantly, does she really want to know the answer?

  1. Well, I’m glad you reviewed this! Lol! It keeps popping up being recommended to me and such even though I had a feeling that it wouldn’t be my type of book. Sounds like I was right! Great review!

    1. Thank you. I am the only one who didn’t like this. It has been praised to the skies by all.
I went back to re-read and the main character was awful. Apparently it is a trend to write the main character this way. Blehhh I hate these trends which spoil the thrill

      1. Yup! I understand completely! I actually just out up 2 reviews for books I didn’t appreciate Although they both somehow have around a 4.5 average on goodreads! Lol! Maybe we just don’t know what good books are! 😉👍🍻

      1. Ha ha! Sounds like how I felt about “Girl on a Train”!! That’s another one where I hated the main character a d thought… Can someone just kill this drunk whiner and put ME out of my misery?!

        1. Oh I hated that babe. That was a DNF book. I couldn’t stand that whiny babe. I stopped reading saw the movie, fast forwarded the scenes she is drinking and went to the ending. Both book and movie done in a couple of hours.

          1. Yep, I believe I gave it 4…. I’ve actually liked all of hers I’ve read so far. I suppose though that just shows we all find different books appealing at different times. 🙂
