My review
DI Robyn Carter is back with a bang along with her entire team. And what a team she has! Each one works diligently to bring the case to a close. The cohesiveness of such a team is wonderful to see. There is genuine respect and great camaraderie. The investigation is bang on, and when the points start getting connected as the book progresses, there was only me going — oh yeah.. why didn’t I see that? I would have never guessed such a plot.
This is Carol Wyer’s fourth book in the Robyn Carter series, and she has done it again. Created an outstanding piece of work where investigation is built up part by part thoroughly, and every clue is followed up.
The story is an investigative thriller. A man shot dead in his car with a half written message on his phone + a nurse dying of a blunt force trauma to the head + a man having a cardiac arrest of the golf course = 3 unconnected deaths with Robyn investigating all three separately and then jointly. What is the common factor between the three murders?? How do the clues add up when there was hardly any?? What is the motive of all the 3 deaths?? How many more will there be till Detective Carter makes her discovery??
There is also a parallel story which increases the inner need-to-know-now curiosity. This story runs from childhood to adulthood. Who are the kids as adults now?? And how do they connect to these murders??
To add oil to the already lit curiosity flame, Carol has created a lovely mystery in DI Robyn Carter’s personal life and this does nothing but whet my appetite for more of her books.
The best part of Carol’s book is every step of investigation is written thoroughly and she doesn’t focus on the macabre. Most of the thrillers available in the market now, have writers describing a murder scene or a torture scene in such detail that it reads more like a post mortem report. Such books put me off. But Carol’s way of writing brings the scene to light without making it icky. This was classy!!
There are a few niggles for me, when the investigation turns intense, there are too many characters all of a sudden, and then it requires total concentration to recollect the parts the characters play. I still had some unanswered questions regarding certain characters at the end of the book.
In saying this, I do declare that Carol has written a delicious classy thriller (as always) where every scene is like a jigsaw puzzle which DI Robyn Carter tries to fit together till the final picture emerges. And it always is a different, shocking ending. In this book too, she leaves me in blinding eagerness to read her next book, with her lines on the last page…
I received an ARC from NetGalley and publisher Bookouture and this is my honest and unbiased opinion.
My rating : 4 stars
About the Author
Carol E. Wyer is an award-winning author whose humorous books take a light-hearted look at getting older and encourage others to age disgracefully. More recently she has chosen to write for the “dark side” and embarked on a series of thrillers, starting with the gripping best-seller, Little Girl Lost.
Book blurb
The boy studied the bruise turning yellow at the base of his neck. With quick fingers his mother tightened his tie, and pulled his collar high above it. Her eyes alone said, We will not speak of this…
Years later, a man is found shot dead in a local park. On his phone is a draft text: I can’t keep this secret any longer. The recipient is unnamed.
Detective Robyn Carter knows this secret is the key to the case, but his friends and family don’t offer any clues, and all her team have to go on is a size-ten footprint.
Then a nurse is found in a pool of blood at the bottom of her staircase, and a seemingly insignificant detail in her friend’s statement makes Robyn wonder: are the two bodies connected, and has the killer only just begun?
When another body confirms Robyn’s worst fears, she realises she’s in a race against time to stop the killer before they strike again. But just as she thinks she’s closing in, one of her own team goes missing.
Buried in the past is a terrible injustice. Can Robyn uncover the truth before another life is lost?

Aman, just a quick advice, don’t write on anyone’s post about looking at the blog or following your blog. Most of us don’t like such stuff.
When you comment on our posts, we do look at yours and read parts of it. We do follow common curtesy. Telling us on our post makes me feel that you commented only because you want me to follow your blog. Which is a huge disrespect to me and my writing
Nice review Shalini! Can you read this without having read the previous books in the series?
Yes, it is kind of a stand alone. It does give you a background of Robyn Carter’s personal life. So it works
At the same time, I have downloaded her first two books because Robyn is a great character so I am inquisitive.
To know her personal life from the beginning, I am going to read the first two
