MY REVIEW
Past having its hold over the present, and yet a character strong enough to break out of that fear when stakes were high was the core of this story.
Mia was a fighter but she had scars on her psyche too from the yesteryear. Living a life of school teacher I liked her quiet awkwardness in making friends. Then one of teachers goes missing. And it was upto Mia to get to the truth, especially when the cops started questioning her.
A new author for me, Carey Baldwin managed to endear Mia to me. It took us time to become friends, but as the suspense deepened, I liked how she dealt with it.
This was something different than my police procedurals and I liked the way she went about it. The author did put hurdles and twists on her path, and also a way to come out.
Curiosity prodded me on as I rushed through the pages to finally get to the end. As per the norm, an explosive end. Quite a good read with tea and cake.
Yes… Sarah… If you are reading this, I had cake after many years… The first since the pandemic.

BOOK BLURB
Mia covered her mouth to keep from crying out. She hated the dark, but her mother had made her promise. But what was the point of being a good little girl if she couldn’t help her mother? She’d promised her mother not to scream, but she hadn’t promised not to escape…
To the world, Mia Thornton is invisible—a quiet, timid preschool teacher. People would never guess that she found the will to dig her way out of a locked shed when she was just six years old. That she never saw her mother again.
Now, all Mia longs for is a normal life and friends to call her own. But when she runs into a group of colleagues one evening, she discovers that, once again, she’s been excluded. Stung at the rejection, she pockets the keys of one of the women in a petty act of revenge. Celeste Cooper is fearless, pretty, popular—everything Mia wishes she could be.
The next day, Celeste is reported missing. And Mia realizes that it might have been her fault. Wracked with guilt, she joins the search, determined to make up for her mistake. But as she grows closer to Celeste’s family, Mia can’t help but feel she’s being watched…
What if Celeste’s disappearance has more to do with Mia than she realizes? And if she keeps digging, does she risk being dragged back into the dark forever?

Yay for the book and the cake!
Two things come to mind, Shalini; the power our parents have/had over us, and ourselves over our own children. Such a serious responsibility. And the other is – I wish you hadn’t mentioned cake!
Ooh spotted my name and mention of cake! Hope you enjoyed the cake also. x
simple and nice review
Great review Shalini, This sounds good. I made cake last week and threw about 1/3 away as after I has some and my kids has some, there was still too much left for me to eat. Maybe I should have read this book and I might have had another piece.
