My husband was not a monster. No matter what they say…

The day my husband, Michael, stepped in front of a lorry after being questioned by the police, my world fell apart.

He was devoted to me and our six-year-old daughter.

But they’d connected him to the disappearance of a young mother from our tiny village.

Now I stand at Michael’s funeral, clutching my little girl’s hand, with tears in my eyes as I insist to all our friends that he died an innocent man.

Yet the questions have started, and nothing I say will stop them digging for the truth.

But none of them can read the secrets in my heart, or know about the phone I found hidden in his toolbox…

I’m determined that my daughter will not remember her father as a monster.

I will erase any hint of wrongdoing in this house whatever the cost.

Because to keep my daughter safe, the last thing I need is for people to start looking at me…

My Review

What was it all about

A rural setting, a happy family with a child, best friends, and a feeling of camaraderie infused in the prose. Then a woman disappeared. The husband was blamed. He died – was it an accident or a suicide?

The secrets he left behind had the wife, our protagonist, in a quandary. Then she discovered things about him. The Widow was threatened. She was betrayed. How would she find a way out to protect her daughter?

How it made me feel

The different sections of the book were so exciting. I was left with an intense need to get to the end of the story to know the truth. It felt like I was given a gift and told not to peek. How could I resist? But fear not, I did use my self-control and went page after page in sequence.

The author, K. L. Slater, picked her scenes pretty well to help me empathize with the main lead. She led me down the merry way with my imagination doing the rest to add suspense to the plot line.

The Good

The first half was great, as afore quoted, the book caused the heart to pump in more adrenaline. I liked the ambiance created as a small-town secrets with dual plot lines along with a hint of good police investigation. The thriller had the genre mixed together in the right proportion.

Then…

The Bad

In the last 40%, the book felt as if the wound-up toy had lost its steam and didn’t know how to proceed and which direction to pick. It looked to me for answers but my bored, sardonic look didn’t help at all.

A few questions were left unanswered. Two skeletons were found in the same area but that didn’t seem possible as the stories didn’t interconnect. The prose too slowed down from a thriller to a family drama.

There was only one twist, and the end was okay.

The Conclusion

The main question would be – would I recommend it? Yes, as it was a good read. But if you want heart-pumping twists and something that makes you sit at the edge of the seat, then this is not the one for you. This was more like a comfortable but slightly scratchy sweater.

It was good
