My review
I missed reading the first book The Vanishing Girls by this author. That would have given me the base for the knowing Detective Josie and her gang. Nonetheless, this book brought me up to date with her team.
The story starts with Josie and her fiance Luke having personal problems, a call – out leads her to beaten unconscious woman, a lost newborn, and then Luke disappears. The mystery keeps moving deeper into a spiral till Josie suddenly, at a glance, discovers the thread, which when pulled, unravels the whole plot.
An amazingly fast ride by Lisa Regan, the plot was both simple and so twisted, that it made me laugh wickedly. I wouldn’t have ever guessed such a convoluted concept ever.
The story has intermingled short chapters of random deaths which add to the bizarre twists, the layers piling up, till everything crashes. The bonding between Josie, and her team Noah, Gretchen, reporter Trinity was quite uplifting.
The niggles for me were parts of the first book were revealed, and Josie, though dynamic, was a bit controlling. I felt she would have been a better Detective, if she had let go a bit and trusted her team instead if trying to do all on her own.
Lisa Regan as a writer, has conceptualized the plot well before embarking on the writing, and that shines through in the entire story, making this a heck of a ride. There was no detailed gruesomeness which I was thankful about. The story was smooth sailing with a brilliant, crashing finish.
I received an ARC from NetGalley and publisher, Bookouture, and this is my honest and unbiased opinion.
My rating : 4.5 stars

Book blurb
Detective Josie Quinn is horrified when she’s called to the house of a mother who had her newborn baby snatched from her arms.
A woman caught fleeing the scene is Josie’s only lead, but when questioned it seems this mysterious girl doesn’t know who she is, where she’s from or why she is so terrified. Is she a witness, a suspect, or the next victim?
As Josie digs deeper, a letter about a mix-up at a fertility clinic links the nameless girl and the missing child to a spate of killings across the county. Josie is faced with an impossible decision: should she risk the life of one innocent child to save many others… or can she find another way?

Great review Shalini! We’re opposite with this series, I read the first but hadn’t picked this one up trying to get others cleaned off my shelf. Sounds like the second is as good as the first was though. 🙂
True. I did buy the book after your recommendation.
I saw tons of people raving about the first book but I haven’t seen many reviews for the second yet, glad you did enjoy it. 🙂
I did, it was fun

I especially like the short chapters 😀
They are intriguing chapters of one page… Enjoy
Reblogged this on Die Erste Eslarner Zeitung – Aus und über Eslarn, sowie die bayerisch-tschechische Region!.
