MY REVIEW

2 childhood friends – Heather and Jess – until the day when Heather’s sister Flora disappeared, and both seemed to bury some secrets and casting their friendship aside. The story set in the present time saw Heather entering into someone’s home and shooting them. A great first chapter I would say!!

Quite an intriguing storyline, I found myself going with the flow of the prose as the author Claire Douglas took me through some twists and turns. All the while a single question burned the neurons of my brain – Why did the new mother shoot a couple of strangers before turning the gun on herself? She had so much lose and nothing to gain. Or so it appeared.

The writing kept me hooked to the storyline. It did not require my entire concentration to understand the whispers between the lines. The characters were developed well where the story was mainly told from Jess’s who was a journalist now and Margot, Heather’s mom.

Emotions seeped out while the truths took their own sweet time to be revealed. That was the beauty of the writing – longing to know their secrets. I kept switching between the book and audio version, where the narrators were clear in their tone and emotions while keeping me constantly on my toes.

A gripping thriller that could be read in one sitting. A perfect breakfast read.

BOOK BLURB

Everything changed the night she disappeared . . .

On a summer’s night in 1994, sixteen-year-old Flora Powell vanished from her sleepy seaside town without a trace. Their hearts shattered, Flora’s mother, her sister Heather, and Heather’s best friend Jess had to somehow carry on not knowing what happened.

Twenty-five years later, tragedy strikes again when Heather walks into a stranger’s house and allegedly kills two people in cold blood.

Why would this loving wife and doting new mother commit such a heinous crime? Jess, now a reporter, returns to the hometown she left behind to cover the case and dig for answers. But this isn’t like any other story. Jess was like a sister to the Powell girls, until the summer that tore them all apart.

What happened to the girl she used to know?

The question haunts Jess and propels her to find the key that may unlock the mysteries involving both sisters. But the search may reveal more . . . a darker side to this idyllic place she thought she knew. (
