MY REVIEW
Quite a different read where three people were connected by unique strings of energy. Zimera was an age-old spirit who was pulled to Cyril and best friend Austin.
When Cyril’s aunt died and he battled with depression, it was when Zimera knew he needed her the most. Once their bond was molded, healing started in their hearts, some more than the others. But free will was always present amongst them.
My first book by author Kareen Samuels, it was a unique story that unfolded in front of me. I liked Zimera’s mission which brought a hint of paranormal to realistic fiction. Forgiveness and healing were weaved into the prose beautifully along with a hidden, unexpected twist. I liked the infusion of Jamaican culture which uplifted the story and made it interesting.
Then came my niggles. There were pages of introspection and thought, even the lines which ought to be powerful, emotive dialogues were written as narration so the prose barely touched my heart. The story had potential to be explosive if it had had emotions and depth in its relationships, thereby making it come alive.
Overall, being the author’s debut, it was interesting in its concept.

BOOK BLURB
Zimera is an ancestral spirit who has been dispatched to rescue a loved one in desperate need. Cyril Parks is a very successful stand-up comedian who has made millions laugh but he is chronically depressed and nurses a very dark secret.
Cyril was raised by his Jamaican aunt, (aunt Felecie) who has taught him that a man is not supposed to cry. Unfortunately, this teaches Cyril a type of toxic masculinity and only serves to further complicate his understanding of emotions and the catharcism that they bring. Also, he needs help to recover from childhood traumas and other life issues which seek to overwhelm him but he lacks the language of emotional vulnerability to discuss these issues; therefore, he suffers in silence.
The good thing is that he has a lifelong friend, Austin Blane, who has experienced similar traumas and who becomes his primary support system. These traumas have yoked these two together for life or is it just the shared traumas which unite them? When Cyril loses a loved one and meets a strange woman, events unfold that will change the trajectory of their lives forever. Things will never ever be the same between them.

I received an ARC from the author, and this is my journey down its pages, straight from the heart. STRICTLY HONEST and UNBIASED.
