This is a teaser….

My review would go live tomorrow

A twisted tale about a missing child and a known abuser who was in prison!

Was it a copycat or did DCI Jack Logan make a grave mistake?

The story stole my breath away, and I was at the edge of my seat when I reached the last page.

An absolutely fab read!!

Catch my complete review tomorrow, see me fall in love with both JD Kirk’s debut and Jack Logan.

All my reviews can be read here

Logan sat in a moulded plastic chair and gazed upon the face of evil. For its part, the face of evil smiled vaguely back at him, its eyes shimmering in confusion, never quite focusing all the way on the visitor.

Logan wasn’t buying it. He had never bought it. No
matter what the doctors said.

Owen Petrie. Mister
Whisper, the papers had called him back in the
day. Back when he’d abducted and murdered three wee boys and done his damnedest to snatch away two more.

It was statements from the two close-calls that had
led to the nickname. They’d both mentioned his voice as he’d tried to talk them into his van—a soft, whispering rasp—and the tabloids had lapped it up.

He sat in an old-fashioned high-backed armchair now,
cowed and shrunken by the size of it. Back when he’d been on the outside, he’d been a right Dapper Dan, suiting and booting it whenever he was out and about. Shirt. Tie. The works.

Now, he sat slouched in an old pair of grey joggies
and an off-white t-shirt that was threatening to drown him. Food stains dotted the front of it, varying shades of orange blemishes suggesting curry was a regular staple on the hospital menu.

He hadn’t shaved in days. Or been shaved, Logan supposed.
His stubble was a salt and pepper lavvy brush, heavy on the salt. His hair had been trimmed on the left side of his head. The right side was mostly bald, the hair there never having grown back around the site of the injury that had put him in his current condition.

Supposedly put him in his current condition.

The room was a private one, and as drab as any of the
others in the hospital. Aside from the chairs, there was a narrow bed, a narrower wardrobe, and a desk that never got used. The edges of all the furniture had been smoothed off, the corners chunky and rounded.

There was a good-sized window, divided into much smaller chunks by a crisscross of sturdy spars. The bleakness of the view—the window looked directly onto another even grimmer section of the hospital—pleased Logan immensely. Good enough for the bastard.

Too good!!

The little rolling hospital table that was usually
positioned by the bed had been set up like a barrier between both men. A plastic jug of room temperature water sat on it, untouched. Logan lifted the jug and placed it on the desk which, like everything else in the room, was within easy arm’s reach.

“Owen,” Logan began, opening his folder. “I’m told
you’ve been bright these last few weeks. I’m hoping that means you’re ready to help me.”

‘A breath of fresh air in the crime fiction genre.’ – L.J. Ross
‘Gripping. Atmospheric. Chilling. A superb debut.’ – Adam Croft

Was the biggest case of his career the worst mistake he ever made?

Ten years ago, DCI Jack Logan stopped the serial child-killer dubbed ‘Mister Whisper,’ earning himself a commendation, a drinking problem, and a broken marriage in the process.

Now, he spends his days working in Glasgow’s Major Investigations Team, and his nights reliving the horrors of what he saw.

And what he did.

When another child disappears a hundred miles north in the Highlands, Jack is sent to lead the investigation and bring the boy home.

But as similarities between the two cases grow, could it be that Jack caught the wrong man all those years ago?

And, if so, is the real Mister Whisper about to claim his fourth victim?

A Litter of Bones is the explosive debut crime thriller novel from JD Kirk, an exciting new voice in Scottish crime fiction. Perfect for fans of L.J. Ross, Ian Rankin, Chris Brookmyre, and Stuart Macbride.

‘A phenomenal novel.’ – M.A. Comley

JD Kirk lives in the wilds of Scotland, where he spends his days making stuff up and writing it down. He lives with his wife, two children, one dog, and – if his daughter has anything to do with it – a cat in the very near future.

Having been writing in various genres for over a decade, JD turned his attention to crime fiction in May 2019, and hasn’t looked back. A Litter of Bones is his first crime novel, and the first of his hundred-plus books that his wife could bring herself to read.
