You must live in the present, launch yourself on every wave, find your eternity in each moment

Thoreau

With lines as significant as these, I knew there was only one word to describe this book – BEAUTIFUL!! The book had it all.

Erin an ER physician in Boston returned home to New Dublin to be with her best friend Jenna who was in terminal stages of cancer. The book bespoke of friendship between the two girls with laughter and tears, happiness and sadness, joy and sorrow. The story was a perfect reflection of life and showed how forever could be lived in the shining moments of the present.

In this poignant journey of self discovery and self acceptance, Erin learnt how to be okay with the past, let go of the old, and live every moment. Set in a small town with politics and crime, there was a drug bust, illicit affairs, gruesome murder, ghosts, bears, lost memories, killer father, camaraderie of a small town, a second chance at love with Luke. The book had its tear-rendering moments, but they were only in the initial chapters. It had more of giggles and smiles and naughty innuendoes. Luke was the perfect counterfoil to Erin.

K. Carothers is a brilliant intuitive author, she knew how to make the story interesting without becoming too preachy, all the scenes just felt emotionally balanced. Every subplot was like a string intertwining with each other in such a way that you ended up getting a bond with different colors and each perfectly placed. The book did have the niggles, too many medical jargon and procedures may put off some but it was perfect for me.

Interspersing with quotes from Thoreau and Einstein this book was one of my most poignant beautiful reads of 2019, which left me speechless for 2 days. The book was simply perfect for me. Erin reminded me of ME, her past left her plenty scarred and to see her finding the courage to face them all inspired me to face my own.

I am a total fan of Author K. Carothers and will read every book of hers. She has a fan in me forever!!

P. S. If I ever find a guy who makes love as sensuously as Luke, I ain’t ever leaving him. He would be tied to the chair… Or should I say tied to the bed!!

I downloaded a digital copy of the book from Kindle Unlimited, and this is my journey into its pages, straight from the heart!!

Do you believe in the paranormal? Have you seen ghosts in real life? Let me know in comments… I am excited and scared!!

K. Carothers has been an emergency room physician for over 15 years. She received her medical degree at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health in 1997. Prior to that she earned a B.S. in Psychology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1993. Dr. Carothers also served as a physician and Flight Surgeon in the United States Air Force, achieving the rank of Major, and was part of a unit that was awarded the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award with Valor. She has two daughters, two dogs, and a cat who thinks he’s king of the jungle.

Dr. Erin Pryce is an ER physician in Boston who must face the painful past she’s tried to escape from when her best friend, Jenna Godfrey, is diagnosed with terminal cancer. Jenna still lives in New Dublin, Wisconsin, the small town they grew up in–a town Erin vowed she would never return to. But now she has no choice. Jenna needs her. And then everything Erin thought she knew is turned upside down in New Dublin, especially when she crosses paths with Luke Mathis, a detective who has his hands full in a town teeming with crime and corruption. Erin is pretty good at finding trouble herself, and the story is intertwined with plenty of medical drama, mystery, romance, humor, and even an element of the paranormal. But in the end it’s all about people helping each other survive, and the power of love to overcome any obstacle.

  1. That book cover is pretty. Lovely review👍 Yes, I think I saw a ghost one very rainy night while returning home with my folks. I was either 7 or 8. One second a figure clad in white was there and the next 2 seconds it was gone. I looked back one more time and it was there. I can’t say if it was a figment of my imagination, but I was really scared and didn’t dare say a thing about it to anyone.

  2. Beautifully written review Shalini. And, yes, I believe there things all around that some would label “paranormal.” And, yes, I have experienced this in my life. 😉

  3. Great review, Shalini! This sounds right up my alley. You had me laughing imagining you tying up your lover and never letting him go. Hehe! And yes, I not only believe in ghosts, I have experienced the “presence” of someone I lost after he was gone (I promise I’m not crazy–it really happened). 🙂 Have a great Sunday!

    1. I too have experienced my aunt after she died… We all did, she came to say goodbye… I still cry and I still miss her. My entire family lost weight at the shock of losing her, my parents became scrawny. We still pray to our grandparents and the relatives gone in times of trouble. And yes, some of the problems have been sorted out…
Life cannot be finite, we are energy – cannot be lost or made, we are always there in one form or the other. There has to be more than this body… The soul is infinite
I have also experienced the dark presence and I sometimes can feel them at 2am… You are not at all crazy… You are just open to the other side of it…
Science cannot answer everything. If Ghosts are just coined by writers and other believers, but the proof is they have been there from time immemorial, from the conception of time. So there has to be some truth in that.

On a fun note, oh yes, if I get a guy like Luke, he is tied to me and to the bed… 😂 😂

  4. Oh Shalini. Lol. Your review alone made me feel so many different emotions, so I can only imagine the book. How wonderful to feel and connect with a book on so many levels.

    1. I am so glad that came out in the book, I was kind of blocked for words while writing it as so many emotions strangled my thoughts… 😍😘💖
