MY REVIEW

I strongly believe nobody could do police procedural as author Carol Wyer. Before starting the book, I had a wish that some writer in this genre would use the thought I had for the killer. And Carol did it!! It was my dream come true. And yes, some days I have evil ones too.

This book had many things going for it, a strong yet slightly broken protagonist, Kate Young, intriguing yet gruesome murders, and a killer who was intelligent and stayed one step ahead. That got my interest peaking.

The team assisting Kate was small yet determined, and I loved how forensics played a good part in the story. Swiftly paced, the prose had the investigation of the present and the history of Kate’s past intertwined. This worked as a teaser for my mind to wonder where the author would go. They were well linked.

Kate’s PTSD was sensitively shown. I too was scared if the visions would affect her investigation. Sheer determination was the vibe I was left with.

Slightly longer than my usual books, at 422 pages, I was eager to get to the end and was delighted to see the twists. There were three major ones which brought a gasp. Oh my. Wicked author.

Many suspects, a daring plotline which flowed seamlessly, an atmosphere of race against time slowly gaining its pitch, the book was a complete showcase of the author’s prowess. She is rightfully the queen of this genre.

MY RATING

Rating: 5 out of 5.

BOOK BLURB

A killer running rings around the police. A detective spiralling out of control.

DI Kate Young is on leave. She’s the force’s best detective, but her bosses know she’s under pressure, on medication and overcoming trauma. So after her bad judgement call leads to a narrowly averted public disaster, they’re sure all she needs is a rest.

But when Staffordshire Police summon her back to work on a murder case, it’s a harder, more suspicious Kate Young who returns. With a new ruthlessness, she sets about tracking down a clinical, calculating serial killer who is torturing victims and leaving clues to taunt the police. Spurred on by her reporter husband, Young begins to suspect that the murderer might be closer than she ever imagined.

As she works to uncover the truth, Young unravels a network of secrets and lies, with even those closest to her having something to hide. But with her own competence—and her grip on reality—called into question, can she unmask the killer before they strike again?

  1. Oh Shalini, what a review! Thank you for al the praise for me and my book. My head has now swollen to twice its normal size.
I admit to sniggering at being told I was a wicked author. 😀 Thank you so much for putting such a smile on my face and for taking part in the tour and sharing your thoughts. It is hugely appreciated and reviews like this keep me going! Many thanks indeed. By the way, I’m also very glad I brought your own wicked thoughts to life with my choice of murderer xx

    1. Hey Carol when I started the book, the only wish I had was about the Killer as I wanted something different. Without giving away spoilers, I wondered about the killer if I were writing it. And lo and behold, you put forth an intelligent one who knew how to go about it.
It is so difficult not to give away spoilers here. hahaha. At 2 am, I was snickering and gasping. And yes, I was on the killer’s side. I love intelligence and the way things got done.

  2. I got this one for free as one of my Amazon First Reads and I’ve not read it yet. A lot of people have been talking about it this week though and I’ve seen really mixed reviews. I’m hoping ill like it when I get around to reading it ♥

Awesome to see you here. Let's chat.
