This was one twisted book. It took me a couple of tries to get into it, but soon I found the book getting into me.
2 friends and one secret hidden for 20 years till it slithers out like an insidious snake hissing and biting. Naomi and Sophie are best of friends, where Sophie has held on to a secret of what happened one night, apparently to protect Naomi, till her anger comes out as her jealousy.
Clare Boyd’s characters were unlikable, where both had a hate – love relationship with each other. The scenes in the book were slow and repetitive, the book seemed to show the same routine of both women. There were good twists, the last ending was shocking.
This book was one where I was excited yet deflated, it had potential yet failed to deliver across the pages, it was thriller-y yet ended in pathos. Too many pages were written telling us about the toxic friendship, yet it was not interesting. I skim read the repetitive parts.
The book on third attempt did manage to pique my interest, and macabre ending was definitely horrifying. All my love was for these two factors.
I received an ARC from NetGalley and publisher Bookouture, and this is my journey into its pages, straight from the heart!!

What do you do with unlikable characters and repetitive lines? Would you persevere or DNF?
Naomi and I are best friends.
School runs, dog walks, a shoulder to cry on over a glass of wine, we’re inseparable.
But now my husband has walked out, I need her more than ever.
I know she will help me pick up the pieces.
Because she knows about the lie I told to protect her.
She knows how much I’ve sacrificed for this friendship.
And she’d never let anyone hurt me.
Would she?

You have had your share of three star books lately. Time for a five star one.
I agree… I read light breezy one, Marialyce, the women have so much luck in that, I almost envied them and I wanted some for me.. 😂 😂
I’m glad you read it 🙂 I loved how truly toxic that relationship was, and I wanted to slap both women, haha!
😂😂😂😂 I kept wondering g if I have such friends or if I am that friend 😂😂
That’s a scary thought, hahahahahahahaha!
Sounds like an interesting premise that didn’t quite live up to what it could have. I seriously love your reviews❤❤❤
Aww you are a cutie. I love yours because you do what I don’t do.. Read all kinds of books… And you are trying to get me book bf but you are just not succeeding this year.. ❤️❤️❤️❤️
I might have found you one in my latest!! Hehe. Love you ❤❤❤
It can be very hard to write unlikeable characters that readers want to invest their time in.
I understand.. This was simply too toxic
These women! Omg. I couldn’t believe how toxic they were for each other.
They were terrible I agree. Uff
I have tried to read it once, set it aside and struggling to pick it up. Glad there are some things that worked out for you though. Great review, Shalini.
It is really a difficult read Diana… Quite repetitive… Not her best book
Yikes, this one sounds tedious – I marvel at your persistence, I would have surrendered 😉
The last scene was so ghastly
Pity it didn’t work out, fingers crossed for the next!
Reading a lovely easy read now ❤️
Great stuff!:)
Wow! What made you give it a third try?
Everybody else’s reviews… All positive reviews… But this was not that great as everyone has been praising.. With incident of dog killing another dog and other such stuff
I have to hand it to you for persistence. That said, I hate to not finish a book. So I’d probably hop, skip and jump through the pages to get to the end.
My comment disappeared so here I go again. It was mighty persistent of you to keep at a book you didn’t much like. The premise seemed interesting. I’m not keen on giving up mid-book but I do skip pages to reach the end.
Omg you were in spam…. Sorry.. I missed you
I liked that you can get to the end with skipping pages I do too 😂😂
Same here, I do that too… Sorry you were in spam..
What a word “thriller-y”. LoL Your reviews are unique professional and so lovely! Five stars for you too! 🙂 Michael
Aww Michael thank you…
Why are you in my spam folder 😞
I’m glad you made it through in the end Shalini – your review was worth it.
This was too vitriolic, toxic and repetitive
The cover is striking though.
Crazy friendship… toxic… yes… better way to describe it. Leave crazy for the fun side 😉
Hahaha… Where is our crazy girl? She has not been seen on my blog the whole of this year 😂
Lol. How did you know I was talking about her 😉. I have to stop by and leave some blog love for her as well.
