This was one of my fun, cute mystery reads, a romantic suspense, you could say. It was a nice diversion between the intense thrillers and not so intense books.

Jannine Gallant writes this genre fabulously. There is a cosiness to the entire book, a special warmth between friends and different characters of the book. But mind you, it is a murder mystery but nothing graphic about it. So that doesn’t remain in the forefront.

Paige and Quentin have been friends forever till they cross the line with a kiss and get into romance and relationship. Meanwhile an old murder and skeleton gets revealed by Paige, and the murderer starts getting antsy when the murder weapon is sold by mistake to Paige. The story rolls on…

This was an easy 2 hour read though I went slowly through its pages as I wanted to savor the entire atmosphere of a small town life. I had begun to guess the identity of the murderer, but I soon stopped following the clues. So my niggles were told to shut up. I just wanted a good, sweet mystery which I could read without too much stress or concentration, and this book fit the bill.

This is the 3rd book in the series, but can be read as a standalone. The other characters of the first 2 books are friends of Paige so they just make fleeting visits in this.

I received an ARC from Kensington, and this is my journey into its pages, straight from the heart.

Write what you know. Jannine Gallant has taken this advice to heart, creating characters from small towns and plots that unfold in the great outdoors. She grew up in a tiny Northern California town and currently lives in beautiful Lake Tahoe with her husband and two daughters. When she isn’t busy writing, Jannine hikes or snowshoes in the woods around her home. Whether she’s writing contemporary, historical or romantic suspense, Jannine brings the beauty of nature to her stories. NATURAL BEAUTY
Antiques shop owner Paige Shephard has a good eye for finding rare treasures in other people’s junk. But when it comes to her love life, her instincts aren’t so sharp. If only she could stop comparing every man she meets to her best friend, Quentin Radcliff . . .

A LAID-BACK LIFESTYLE
Opening a new restaurant in his former hometown of Siren Cove gives Quentin a much-needed break from the string of women he’s been dating—and allows him the space to reconnect with Paige. But being with her after all this time awakens a long-denied desire.

AN INESCAPABLE DANGER
With Quentin at her side—and in her bed—Paige should be happy at last. But she’s unsettled by a series of break-ins at her shop. Figuring out why she’s being targeted is as difficult as figuring out her complicated relationship with Quentin. And when a local woman disappears—and Quentin becomes the main suspect—they’ll have to dig deep into the deadly secrets of Siren Cove’s past to clear his name—and find any hope of a future together.

  1. This one sounds cute!! No crazy twists? No deep crazy life altering secrets? No broken lives or marriages??….. Where is Shalini and what have you done with her?!? 😲 I’m glad that you got cozy with a more simple read!

      1. Ya. I have a couple of mystery/thriller blog tours coming up this month, so I’ll have to branch out a little bit… But, I’m hoping to get a few more Christmas reads in. No twelve days of Christmas for me this year, though!

  2. Glad you enjoyed this one Shalini! I was afraid to try this one as I wasn’t a fan of the last I’d picked up by her but you make it sound good. 🙂

  3. I love how balanced this one sounds. Sometimes thrillers tend to be way too intense, glad to hear that this one remained suspenseful without being too much on the dark side. Great review, Shalini.

    1. This was almost a cozy read, very placid. I read it to calm my mind as I knew it didn’t require much concentration.
