MY REVIEW

I love love love books set on a plane, and this was bloody fantastic. Reading a Clare Mackintosh after such a long time, she made my heart sing with the peals of excitement as adrenaline coursed into my blood, drop by drop

London to Sydney non stop for the first time, so the plane had journalists and other important people along with normal passengers. A death of one of them, followed by a threatening letter to Mina, the air crew member, then it was a race against time.

Her daughter’s life versus the lives of all the passengers was the lever from where her decisions would be catapulted. Therein lay the beginning of suspense when events on the plane reflected with things happening at home with daughter Sophie and husband Adam.

What was not to like – not much actually. Maybe too many passengers and blocked loos… 😂 No, those were the plane problems on a 20 hour flight. Not mine. I felt it was slightly slow to start.

The tension built up to a crescendo from the mid half. The sense of impending danger and what would Mina do rocked within me.

The claustrophobic atmosphere along with the restlessness and cabin fever in the passengers gave it a pulsating feel.

The non stop events happening on land and in air kept the momentum going, aided by the twists and turns as the plane soared high. Innocuous incidents turning dangerous felt to be a rollercoaster.

Darkness written in between the lines, helplessness in a bleak future, hope with a need to be alive, along with a freakout ending made this story mind blowing.

What can I say? I want more of thrillers on a plane. Gimmeeeee…

MY RATING

BOOK BLURB

You can save hundreds of lives. Or the one that matters most.

A claustrophobic thriller set over twenty hours on one airplane flight, with the heart-stopping tension of The Last Flight and the wrenching emotional intensity of Room, Hostage takes us on board the inaugural nonstop flight from London to Sydney.

Mina is trying to focus on her job as a flight attendant, not the problems of her five-year-old daughter back home, or the fissures in her marriage. But the plane has barely taken off when Mina receives a chilling note from an anonymous passenger, someone intent on ensuring the plane never reaches its destination. Someone who needs Mina’s assistance and who knows exactly how to make her comply.

It’s twenty hours to landing. A lot can happen in twenty hours.

Publication Date: July 2021

I downloaded the digital version of the book from an online retail, and this is my journey down its pages, straight from the heart. STRICTLY HONEST and UNBIASED.

  1. The blurb sounds as a good premise for a thriller and the kind of moral challenge the main protagonist must deal with. As such it could go along with Sofie’s Choice, a book about a Jewish woman at Auschwitz who had to chose which one of her two children should be gassed or, by lack of choice, having them both gassed.
