My review
This started out as a medical thriller with an unknown drug Respiron being promoted as a vaccine against the common cold till children started getting seriously sick and dying. This was one of the plots, involving paediatrician Dr. Daniel Winters as his patient too got sick. The book also had a second plot going in the background regarding the good doctor’s wife whom he suddenly started doubting of infidelity.
This was my first book by author Jennifer Jaynes, I picked it up after reading the various reviews. Few points I agreed with, it was a medical thriller done well with twists and the author was very authentic in keeping the plot true to the real life happenings in the pharmaceutical industry. The domestic thriller plot is also enthralling. But the 2 plots did not link and had only Dr. Daniels as the common point.
Dr. Daniels as the main character was least likable. (He was a paediatrician who drunk on work days, so was often seen hungover – that put me off, an absolute no no, for me). He was earnest and tried to do the right thing as a doctor, but he was shown as a weak character. I kept waiting for him to take charge, but other than a couple of meek attempts, he did nothing at all. He was more worried about his marital life.
Pardon me for telling it on the face – when your 18 month old patient dies after receiving the vaccine, and you are thinking about your wife’s infidelity, in my books, you are a crappy doctor!! I am so angry with him. Life of a child always comes first!!
If I took this book as a creative fiction, which was meant to thrill me, then I agreed. The medical thriller did work for me. And for readers like me, who have grown up on such thrillers, the ending was no surprise.
And to readers who got the shock from the ending, believe me, it is the truth in today’s world. Pharmaceutical companies have spun their web all over.
Overall, a good read. I enjoyed most parts of it.
I received an ARC from NetGalley and publisher Thomas & Mercer, and this is my honest and unbiased opinion

Book blurb
Dr. Daniel Winters is living a fairy-tale life. He has a beachfront home in Malibu, a career as a respected pediatrician at a thriving Los Angeles practice, and a gorgeous new wife, Mia. For a man whose past was rife with mental illness, addiction, and thoughts of suicide, it seems too good to be true.
Then Daniel learns that a fellow pediatrician and his family were found slaughtered in their home. It’s just the first chip in the facade of Daniel’s perfect life. Little by little, everything starts to fall away. At work, his career becomes at risk when he’s asked to remain silent about a dangerous new drug. At home, Mia has gone from an affectionate newlywed to a mysterious woman carefully hiding secrets—and possibly a lover.
Then, another doctor is found dead, and as Mia’s behavior becomes increasingly suspicious, Daniel begins to wonder: Is paranoia getting the best of him…or has his fairy-tale life become a nightmare worse than he could have ever imagined?

Excellent review, Shalini! I read this back a ways and really liked it! I agree about Dr Daniels—he just could not get it together!!!
I agree. He made me cringe as a doctor… I can’t imagine ever doing that Mackie… He was pretty icky
And yet, he is authentic. The vaccine industry thrives because so few doctors are made of strong, smart, stuff.
Great review, Shalini! Same here for Dr Daniels…he literally made me cringe as a doctor😥😥…
I agree… He was icky!!
Hell yea, he was!!!
Terrific review Shalini – this sounds like one I don’t need to bother with. Thanks!
It is good Mackey. Most have liked the suspense. But the doctor being so disconnected with losing a patient made me totally hate him… 😣
Great review! I’ve seen a few good reviews for this one, and I really liked Disturbed by Jennifer Jaynes… Adding this to my TBR. 😊
This is a good read…I liked parts of it. I have to read her other books..
Oooh this sounds intriguing! I agree with you though – he does not sound like a very good doctor.
He wasn’t, quite icky!!
Thank you 💕
Great review Shalini. This sounds like an awesome read, another one to add to my TBR list. Have a wonderful day honey 😉
Wonderful night Jody!!! It is exactly half hour past midnight!! 🌃😘
I am a bit conflicted though really, the doctor totally turns me off, so I am hoping if I do put this on my list it will be worth it, it sounds like it would be great. But I don’t want to rush to judgement here either, lol! I will probably end up reading it, I know me. ❓ 😋
Hahaha read it Judy. It is on kindle unlimited… Also I don’t like such doctors so that put me off. The thriller parts are good…
Wonderful review!💛
He was a paediatrician who drunk on work days, so was often seen hungover…. yeah i can see how that would be off putting in fiction and even worse in real life!
By the way, I’m loving your new logo/ avatar thingy.
Thank you Darling for noticing it.. 😉😉😍😍❤️💜😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘
He was just icky, I cringed at the idea of such a doc, you know why….
Oh yeah! yuck!
great review
Thanks Ayushi check your mail for books and invitation
Oh yes, I read this one as well and was shocked by the apathy of the doctor. He was weak but even so the conclusion was shocking. SUPER review, and as with Nina, I’ve been watching with interest your changes, all good. I continue to be blown away with your energy. But also worried about you burning candles at both ends.
No no not burning candle… I get up late… 🕯️😂😂Taking care of myself🔮
Great review Shalini. It sounds like that doctor really needed to get his priorities right. Interesting that the two story lines were only linked by having a common charcater. I read this author’s previous title. It was a good, Halloween read though I struggled with a few issues.
I have to read other books by this author. Apparently they are good…
Great review Shalini. It is actually scary to think that pharmaceutical companies don’t always care about the patients, but the money. I do have this one to read and need to get to it.
They really don’t care. Their bottom line is money Carla. I have complained to them many times about the quality of product… But they never bother…
Read it… Parts of it are great
I do have a copy on my tablet, just haven’t gotten to it yet.
I really like the sound of this book. I’m going to have to add it to my TBR list!
It is on kindle unlimited hence I am going to check out other books by her. Apparently her previous book is much better
