This was a different dystopian read which cannot be read as a standalone as it followed the story of the characters in book 1 and 2

Floods had destroyed most of the country, and 6 years post the apocalypse, a band of refugees had settled in a small community, the Village, which worked under their own governance, a democratic rule of sorts. Jesse Ryder was the steward.

Book 1 had her sister-in-law Ruth and 3 other women kidnapped and rescued. Book 2 had one of the girls Sarah falling in love with a kidnapper who was later found to be innocent and given a place in their village.

This was book 3 which had some people not liking the idea of a kidnapper living amongst them, the outer world wanting their homes for people outside the Village, and the sister-in-law and other women suffering from PTSD.

My third book by Rachel McLean, this was a story which had one thing happening after the other from the beginning to the end. It felt as if steward Jess didn’t have a moment to rest. The community felt to be under a state of deep unrest. The outside world too intruded on this tiny village and wanted a slice of their community, their homes. Change had started whether the people wanted it or not.

In this, Rachel showed me a different world post an apocalypse. This was a book of rehabilitation where change brought both good and bad effects. So far the people had lived in a secluded manner, but now they had to open up and venture out. It was pretty daunting when I imagined this scene.

I liked how the human psyche was explored. Different facets and different emotions were shown. It was quite thought provoking to see how the people responded. There were some who were prisoners of their own fear and wanted to fight. Desperation too found its corner and played with people’s mind. Coveting others’ property had greed creating havoc in their sedate lives, soon leading to murder. PTSD and flashbacks had the women losing touch with reality. Rachel has left no stone unturned to show the aftermath of an apocalypse.

A smoother flow of the plot lines would have uplifted the book for me. Nonetheless, I enjoyed knowing these characters and their lives in depths. A good read.
