MY REVIEW

A cozy read was this by author Hannah R. Kurz where the murder provided the right entertainment on a lazy Sunday.

The story started off well with Stephanie Wu, the new mother, living her family bliss with The Likable Daisy providing her regular shots of caffeine and sugar. And the owner was killed in supposedly a kitchen mishap. Steph got to investigating it.

A few things I liked. Steph’s instincts, the way she managed baby, home, and the mystery. She was pretty likable so it became easy to be swayed by her. The whodunit was interesting. I got to pit my knowledge against hers.

Therein lay my niggles. The writing told me things which were not needed. I liked knowing Steph and husband Henry, but I didn’t need the extra information. Yes, I do know the cozy formula. But this meandered far way at times.

Though mainly in Steph’s POV, it had a couple of others’ too. So for me, I wanted a sharpened prose yet rounded in a wholesome way. A bit more of worldbuilding would have made it come alive.

I had a couple of suspects, yet the motive and the killer sideswiped me. So I liked that surprise. Overall, an entertaining debut.
