Book 1 in the series

Lacy newly shifted to this town 6 months ago, is a runner and has skirmishes with the running leader Marlene off and on. Her best friend Stax (a bookstore owner) and Ruby (a writer) soon join her and get embroiled in solving the murder of Marlene where Lacy is the primary suspect.

My second book by author T. C. Wescott, the characters described were certainly varied. Ruby was the cutest in this trio with her brilliant mind and keen sense of detection having written many murder mysteries herself. But she was enigmatic. Stax was the loudmouthed best friend who was all heart and had some good. But she kept talking at serious scenes too. Lacy was sweet and kind but too judgmental yet not a good judge of people. She was kinda dumb at some scenes. And the entire story was through her POV. The other characters of this town were also not charming enough to get me invested in this story.

The book had parts of a cozy murder mystery, but most of it had a very slow pace. The ending just topped it off, THE FINAL REVEAL JUST DRAGGED FOR PAGES. I wanted to know WHO, WHY, and HOW of the murder mystery, but by the time the story ended, I had lost my interest.

The book had potential, but didn’t live up to its expectations.

I downloaded the digital version of the book from Kindle Unlimited, and this is my journey into its pages, straight from the heart!!

Lacy Purdy loves her new town, her new job, and her old cat, Meatball. And she loves to run.

Stax is a short, sassy bookseller with a big personality and a mouth to match.

Ruby is a retired mystery writer from detective fiction’s Silver Age who believes her faculties for puzzle solving have never been better. Or is she a delusional old lady leading them down the wrong path and towards a dead(ly) end?

Marlene is a mean-girl marathoner who inexplicably disappears during a mid-day run. Lacy suspects foul play. Everyone else suspects Lacy.

  1. I read Slay Bells by Wescott and wasn’t too impressed. Given your review of this one I think I’ll stray away from this one too.

      1. Yeah if you thought these were worse than Slay Bells it’s a hard pass from me! Thank you for sparing me!!

  2. I don’t do well with slow. LOL And I like you lose interest by the end. Sigh….. hope your next read is a winner . <3

    1. Sighhh it is not… I am stuck with a book since the past 3 days… I want to know the murderer but damn the book describes every day, every hour of the police investigation… The characters are so many. I am reeling

  3. Hmmm. The blurb is intriguing, but the title threw me off. It sounds more like a comedy than a mystery. I keep picturing giant scissors chasing people and I want to laugh. Slow is my biggest fiction pet peeve. If it’s slow, it’s DNF for me. At least you finished it, which is more than I would have gone. 🙂 Another nice review, Shalini. Thanks for sharing! 🙂

    1. Leslie… The first thought which came to me was Edward Scissorhands… Not that I liked that movie but that was my first thought.
      This was a cozy mystery… Everyone liked…. But I didn’t 🤔🤔

  4. I’m sorry you didn’t like this book. You know already that I did (the slowliness made me feel like I was reading a classic crime story which I love – I get how it can bother people, though). I do agree on Lacy, though, she’s not a very smart person 😅 I loved Ruby and Stax, but Lacy wasn’t the best main character…

  5. I know the cover isn’t meant to be funny but I can’t stop cracking up when I look at it with the whole scissors thing 😀 The premise sounds interesting but sorry to hear about the slow pace especially. Great review.

    1. It was supposed to be cute cozy funny books yet I didn’t find them so… 😂 😂 I kept reading other reviews all have loved it🤔

  6. I loved the title of the book. As to the characters…Have you known adults that you felt like never got out of middle school? That is what your description of these characters reminded me of.

    1. Yes – ME.. some days I am that adult… 😂
Characters were different but couldn’t love them… But most readers have loved the book.

      1. And that’s OK. When I’m trying to decide on a book, I always read multiple reviews before I buy a book. For ARC’s I don’t read reviews until I have posted mine. (It’s also OK that you are sometimes “that adult” 🤣

  7. Nice review Shalini. YOu are not doing well in the book reading lately, I hope it picks up for you. That cover was great, it looked like it would be fun. Oh well, slow means no. 😆😅😢

    1. Hahaha… I am really doing terrible in the books.. I read a couple of doozies… My reviews are on Goodreads, not sure if I should put it up on the blog 😂😂🤣🤣🤷‍♀️
