This was one unexpected ride down a hollowed tunnel where I came out into a rural setting probably in some foregone era where the unscrupulous Sheriff still rode horses. What do I say about a book which threw me for a loop and made me look at things differently?
A young girl Misty went missing, the Hound boys Michael and John were suspected and tortured until the remains of Misty were found. Then the boys along with best friends Chloe and Steven investigated and came across a truth so foul that the roots of it went back decades.
My third book by author Didi Oviatt, saw me delighted with this tale. It was gruesome and gory, the graphic details showed me how bad things could really get. I quite enjoyed learning about the perversions of a human mind. They were darker and deeper than the abyss. A human so soulless resided in that town that I was sucked into the story around the massacre trying to find out the identity of this ghoul. It was certainly an atmospheric read where the townsmen not only saw hardships, illness, and financial depression, but justice was ruled by the ruthless Sheriff and his sidekick.
Ms. Oviatt has done a fabulous job in writing a story which has intrigue and suspense, innocence and evil, all admixed so well that it showed the core nature of people who came together in such times of peril.
How can the review be mine if there were no niggles. So they along intermittently. The beginning felt a bit rocky as if the characters were unsure if the slot that Didi has placed them in. But once they settled, the story and the emotions rolled on. The story could have been more smoother and sequential, just felt a wee bit disjointed. But I also agree, the main characters were immature sleuths.
Overall, the book was fun, it engaged my emotions to the point that I kept turning pages eagerly as fast I could read, to get to the perp. I forgot the world in those 2 hours. The book sure kept me on my toes. Toes are very significant, to know how – READ THE BOOK!!
I received a digital copy of the book from the author, and this is my journey into its pages, straight from the heart!!
Didi’s books
When local girl Misty is found dead in an underground bunker, the town is thrown into a whirlwind of panic and speculation. Times are tough, but the spaced-out farmer community pull together as one, trying to uncover who’s guilty.
Thrown smack in the middle of the chaos is a group of teens: local troublemakers, but with good hearts. Although they’re innocent, the local law enforcers believe otherwise, and the true killer is lurking far too close for comfort.
Will the four be able to uncover the truth before one of them pays the price for Misty’s death?
