My review

The blurb sounded so interesting and having read Alex Sinclair’s books previously, I started reading this book with excitement.

“It was our five-year anniversary, and I had just witnessed my husband die.”

These lines from the prologue gripped me further. I was literally restless, with impatience pulsating through me to know how Grace would manage and what would be her next step.

The book started with a bang but then progressed with a dull whimper. Grace cried for 6 weeks and more, and then too did nothing much in the first half of the book. I liked Alex’s attempts in creating an atmosphere where Grace appeared to be delusional, her best friend Jennifer certainly kept telling her that till 90% of the book. (Some best friend!)

I liked the mysterious appearances that occurred in the book, but I think the author tried too hard to make this book more intriguing and in the process failed. I could guess the plot right at the beginning. I was just frustrated at the way the main character did nothing for 70% of the book. I don’t like slow burners, but I have gotten used to them now. But things happened in this story only in the last 30% and they were all expected twists!!

I wish the book had something more in it. I wanted my pulse to race, my palms to sweat, and my breaths to gasp. Overall, it was a good read. Started at 10pm, finished at 11 30pm and review done by 12am midnight. On to my next read!!

I received an ARC from NetGalley and publisher Bookouture, and this is my honest and unbiased opinion.

My rating : 3 stars

Book blurb

Grace Dalton is trying to put her life back together after her husband John died suddenly in a hit and run. Her perfect world is collapsing around her.

But as Grace sorts through her husband’s belongings, she realises the man she loved was lying to her. There’s a mysterious list of names hidden among his things, a secret bank account, and a shocking revelation about his family that he kept from her since the day they met.

Who was John Dalton?

As Grace tries to identify the names on the list she realises something is wrong. She’s imagining things: seeing John in the faces of strangers and finding things in an entirely different place to where she’d swear she left them.

Is Grace losing her grasp on reality, or is someone trying to stop her finding out the truth about her husband?

  1. Sorry to hear that this book wasn’t as good as you had hoped it would be: but wow finish a book that quickly huh? That is really amazing! I once again loved your review, as I always do😘
How are you feeling today? Is your headache better?

    1. Nooo apparently it is a medicine over reaction so I can’t read much. I literally read a few words and shut my eyes. It is a game of chance of what triggers everything… Fed up can’t see TV or digitals… No idea what to do in a dark room with a headache… Blehhh 😣

      1. Aww…I really am sorry to hear that. I truly hope that it will be over soon for you. Are you going to get any medicines that will counter that over reaction?
I hope you will feel better soon Shalini. Truly mean that 😘❤️

    1. I can’t read much for next 10 days, eye strain etc. Under strict orders. Hence my comments on your post has decreased. I see one line and then shut eyes. No digital till I am okay. 😓😓

  2. Ohhhh I’ve had a few books where I can guess what is going to happen… they are frustrating! Sometimes I think maybe it’s because I’ve read too many thrillers – other times I think it’s because authors are getting so good at twists and turns and shocks. So I expect much more now.
Wow – you are a quick reader!!!

  3. Sorry the book didn’t give the best reading experience. I love the way you structure your book reviews. The questions you put in make it so easy to read. Thanks!

  4. Great review Shalini. Sorry this one didn’t meet your expectation exactly, especially with the pacing. I read the author’s previous book. Most reviewers liked that one but I ended up struggling a bit with the pacing.

      1. 3 books lol. Audiobook: Under the Banner of Heaven by Jon Krakauer; A Confederacy of Dunces by John Kennedy Toole; and I’m almost done reading the original screenplay of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. I thought I read fast, but you my dear are one quick reader haha
