Many thanks to Emma and Damp Pebbles Blog Tours for my spot on this Blog Tour.
OMG. This domestic thriller with its drama and suspense was exactly what I needed to keep my mind occupied. Author Mary Torjussen kept me so focused on the story that I hardly blinked. I just had to know the truth. And wow. Just wow.
With the world crisis and suffering from vertigo today, Siri read out the story for me. I thought this book would work out brilliantly as an audiobook. Ruby and Harry were going to leave their spouses and spend life together. Harry didn’t turn up after Ruby bid goodbye to her controlling husband. Later she found some truths about Harry which threw her off.
The Closer I Got, the farther the truths were. I thought the author played me brilliantly when she made me chase after the characters to get to their truths. Each one wore a cloak made of shadows where the truth and lies shone at different times.
The Closer I Got, the more intrigued I was. The author had sprinkled the prose with suspenseful scenes which came just at the right moment to make this book a cut above the routine domestic thrillers. Each character lied, yet spoke the truth.
The Closer I Got, the more I couldn’t leave my kindle alone. I had to know the truth at any cost, that was the most fun I had over the weekend. A midnight read/listen that it was, the story was well worth the sacrifice of my sleep. An entertaining read.
I received a free ARC from NetGalley and the publisher, and this is my journey into its pages, straight from the heart!! STRICTLY HONEST AND UNBIASED.
All my reviews can be read here
They promised to tell their spouses they were leaving and then meet to begin their new life together. But he never shows up.
A new twisting novel of psychological suspense from the acclaimed author of Gone Without a Trace.
Coworkers Ruby and Harry are in love–but they’re married to other people. They decide to tell their spouses that their marriages are over and to start their new lives together. Ruby, who has wanted to leave her controlling husband for a while, tells him she’s leaving him and waits at the hotel where she and Harry are to meet. But Harry never shows up.
Suddenly, Ruby’s life has fallen apart, and she’s lost everything. Harry won’t answer her calls, and she’s fired from her job. She finds a cheap apartment in a run-down part of town, all the while wondering what happened to Harry.
Just as Ruby thinks she’s hit rock bottom, strange and menacing things start to happen–someone is sneaking into her apartment, and someone is following her home late at night–and she is going to have to fight for her survival.

This sounds like a wonderful book! And my hats off to you for finding a way to power through vertigo. I had it once when I had a sinus infection and it was scary. Take care!
It was really bad yesterday … Today too it seems to want to make a comeback… So I am kinda struggling
Thank you so much ❤️
Great review, Shalini. Hope the vertigo is gone now. 😊
Not so much ❤️ no meds available due to lockdown. Fingers crossed
I hear ya’. I’m plagued by some chronic gastrointestinal ailment that’s got me… 🤢 I hope you feel better soon, Shalini. Vertigo stinks. 🤗
I am better, took an expired medicine, that worked slightly… So I could function but those 8 hours were terrible
I’m so glad you’re feeling better. ☺️
Amazing review, thank you xx
😘❤️ Thank you for having me
Sounds like a good thriller, but to be honest, I’m not up to read (again) a story about some controlling psychopath whose only aim is to destroy another one’s life because she dared to mess up his/her calendar: be it the ex husband, the cold feet lover or his wife.
This was quite different. Not sure if you would like it. I like these tropes
Great review! I almost wish you did spoilers. I would love to know what happened to Harry. It seems like the story gets darker and darker. People with secrets–grrr! Never a good thing. I’m glad the book helped you get through a rough night, and I hope you turn the corner soon.
I quite enjoyed this one. Nowadays I seem to be coursing through the book without analyzing it. Thank you so much ❤️
What are you reading Linda?
I don’t usually do two books at once, but I am right now. I am reading A Springtime to Remember, a romance by Lucy Coleman centered around Versailles. Then I close out the evening with nonfiction–Max Lucado’s Anxious for Nothing which relates how we can help our anxious times by looking to God for His peace and strength instead of focusing on our problems. Probably more helpful than watching the news, right?
I too am praying Linda. Sometimes I just have a tantrum because of my fear. I scream and scream for everything. My elderly relatives keep silent. Then I feel so ashamed. It so the stress, the fear of keeping my family and myself safe, to know that another year would go by until vaccine would be available to all. Everything is getting to me. I pray and ask forgiveness. It has been a cycle.
I hope you are feeling better, Shalini! Great review!
Slightly better, 8 hours of room spinning is a bad one. Nausea and vomiting was continuous
Yikes! How horrible!
An expired medicine did the trick. Planning to get good meds in this week so that my dizziness goes away completely
Thank you so much ❤️
This author sounds like a sly one – I am amazed you can still function with vertigo, you are a tough little thing and no shrinking violet!
I am shrinking inside. I asked Siri to read. She went about in robotic voice. Then dictated my review, but it was a struggle. I found an expired medicine, took it felt slightly better today. I did what I never would tell any patient. But shortage of medicines…
Yikes – but ya gotta do what ya gotta do. Sending you sweet aloha and good vibes!
Thank you so much my darling. These are too tough times. Today is a downer for me. I am off to bed
Delightful review, Shalini, love the enthusiasm.
This was so different and it kept me away from news channels. Hence the stars
Thank you so much for this great review, Shalini! I am SO glad you liked it! I hope you’re feeling better soon – I had vertigo years ago and still remember it as the most horrible illness. Take care and stay safe, xx
Thank you so much for your comment here. It is such an honor. You are just a fantastic author. I couldn’t let go of my kindle. Siri was kind enough to read it to me.
