Many thanks to publisher Bookouture for my spot on this Blog Tour.
A heart-pounding thriller that took me by a storm with its tension filled scenes and swift pace. Author C. J. Lyons could give me a massive adrenaline rush in most of the book, compelling me to read it at one go.
Ian was tortured to death trying to save his daughter. Wife Leah just returned home after a heavy night at the ER. And life as she knew it was over. Detective Luka was the only one to stand by her even when clues pointed to Leah’s involvement. The investigation continued further until evil showed its face again.
What a roller-coaster of a ride this book was. My first read by this dynamic author, the imagery of the words stopped my breath many a time. The writing was brilliant with emotions making the words sing. I could feel every single strand of pain and worry that Leah had for her daughter.
Luka too had his own problems, but his attention to detail and gut instincts never wavered. Being the first book in the series, I liked how their interactions went about. A cop and a victim who was probably a suspect.
With only a few characters and good hints, it was easy to guess, though I didn’t know the motive. Just a tiny niggle or two. The last few pages went a bit haywire and decreased the pitch. The motive too was a bit ‘out there.’ But the overall book was pretty enjoyable. I would love to see how the two work together in the next book.
A thrilling police procedural, I must say.
I received a ARC from NetGalley and the publisher, and this is my journey into its pages, straight from the heart!! STRICTLY HONEST AND UNBIASED.

In the distance Leah heard sirens. She ignored them. Right now, her daughter needed her and Emily was just out of reach, curled up under the bed, her eyes closed, desperately shaking. Leah did the only thing any mother would do. She crawled through the blood to get to her daughter.
Dr Leah Wright returned to her childhood home in rural Pennsylvania with her husband to find peace and quiet, start afresh and raise her six-year-old daughter Emily. But when she gets home one dark winter night, clutching roses in her hand, she finds her daughter huddled under her bed and her husband’s blood all over the floor…
When Detective Luka Jericho is called to investigate, he’s shocked to learn that the killer left a witness behind – the victim’s young daughter. The scene is a painful reminder of his fiancé’s unsolved death, and he is desperate to find out what Emily saw that night. He knows that the killer could still be out there, waiting to strike again.
But growing up, Leah learned the hard way that the only person she could rely on was herself. And it’s not until she and Emily are attacked again that she realizes just how close the killer is. Can she trust Luka to keep her daughter safe?

This book is on my radar.
This is one of my upcoming reads. Glad your experience with it was positive despite the issue with the motive and final chapters. Great review!
Sounds like a very interesting police procedural and you know, I love stories that take you on a rollercoaster ride ❤️. Great review!

This sounds like a hearty breakfast 😉
Great review, Shalini. I’m glad you mostly enjoyed it.
Thank you so much ❤️ Stephen
Definitely a thriller! I guess as a reader you’ll just have to think of the journey as more important than the destination (ending). Perhaps the next book will improve in that aspect, but it does sound like a good read.
With this fantastic review, i have to put it on my TBR too. Thank you Shalini. Be well and stay save. Michael
Thrilling review too Shalini
