Happy Publication Day!!
The book was like a bundle of knotted yarn with the two sisters trying to unravel it from the ends. Rosie had looked out for Laura throughout her life, and when Laura had a date from an online dating site, she was her sister’s biggest fan lending her a dress and encouraging her. Then Laura failed to return from her date and Rosie was worried out of her mind, not for Laura but for the guy she had been with. With a blurb as this, a thrill shot through me as I started reading.
My first book by Wendy Walker, the story was told from 2 POV, Rosie as she went in search of her sister finding out the different truths and Laura as she narrated the stories of her past to her date Jonathan.
The eagerness and curiosity built up in me slowly, creeping in like a tiny plume of smoke that sways into a closed room, the first warning of the fire outside. I knew that things would happen soon. There was this aura of impending danger, where I could feel in my bones that someone was lying or probably all of them were liars. A coat of duplicity that these characters wore delighted the wickedness in me, I couldn’t hold back my sinister smiles.
As I turned the pages faster, I wanted the story to go slower, if you know what I mean. I wanted to savor the words, bathe in the feeling of the hints of knowledge. I knew if the story ended, I would drop down from this feeling of book high. But at the same time, I craved the ending like a book-junkie. And yes, I was that desperate!! A ball of shivers was what I was by the time I reached the end.
Do I really now need to say how much I loved the book? Wendy’s writing did all this and more. It was a slow read, slower than my usual thrillers, but that made this book so much fascinating too. The ending was a surprise for me too.
I received an ARC from Edelweiss, and this is my journey into its pages, straight from the heart!!
All my reviews can be read here
WENDY WALKER has worked as an attorney specializing in family law. Her novels include Emma in the Night and All is Not Forgotten. She lives in Connecticut, where she is at work on her next novel.
Laura Lochner has never been lucky in love. She falls too hard and too fast, always choosing the wrong men. Devastated by the end of her last relationship, she fled her Wall Street job and New York City apartment for her sister’s home in the Connecticut suburb where they both grew up. Though still haunted by the tragedy that’s defined her entire life, Laura is determined to take one more chance on love with a man she’s met on an Internet dating site.
Rosie Ferro has spent most of her life worrying about her troubled sister. Fearless but fragile, Laura has always walked an emotional tightrope, and Rosie has always been there to catch her. Laura’s return, under mysterious circumstances, has cast a shadow over Rosie’s peaceful life with her husband and young son – a shadow that grows darker as Laura leaves the house for her blind date.
When Laura does not return home the following morning, Rosie fears the worst. She’s not responding to calls or texts, and she’s left no information about the man she planned to meet. As Rosie begins a desperate search to find her sister, she is not just worried about what this man might have done to Laura. She’s worried about what Laura may have done to him…
