My review

Man, what a book!! Can I repeat it again – What a book!!

I loved how the book began, it has been three years since Zoe’s son Ethan died via accidental drowning in the river along with his best friend Josh, when suddenly Zoe gets a warning. An email which casts suspicion that maybe Ethan’s isn’t accidental!!

“You need to find out the truth about what happened to your son. Don’t let this rest. Don’t believe the lie.”

And Zoe starts investigating…

What really happened to Ethan? And who was sending her these warnings, that too after 3 years?

My first book by Kathryn Croft (yes, I am soon going to read all her other books), and the book was a thrilling rush in each page. I loved the way a mother’s heart wrenched at the thought that her child was deliberately killed. I loved the way Zoe stood alone, strong and determined, trying to go back into the past, to days prior to Ethan’s death. I loved the way, the mother in her, looked after and cared for the elder son. I loved the way Zoe never gave up. And I loved the way she gave total loyalty and support to her sons. I loved Zoe!

The book was a total roller-coaster ride. I loved its bumpy roads, the twists and turns churned my stomach, and I enjoyed every bit of it. I was in such a book high till something niggled me (FYI the book also had the word “niggles” in it, sooo happy)

The ending – it could have been so much better. I went – nooo, don’t do this to me now. I loved you, book, why are you doing this to me. Change the ending, change the ending!! And there were some unanswered questions raised by that ending. Sighhh!!!

But the overall book was fab. I read it over 2 days as I didn’t want it to end. I went so slow, so that the story appeared never-ending. I did read parts of the book hiding from my boss. I wanted to read one more chapter before I had to stop. The book kept me going for 2 days. I loved the book, and it loved me back. Happy dance!! 💃💃

I received an ARC from NetGalley and publisher Bookouture, and this is my honest and unbiased opinion.

My rating : 4 stars

  1. I’m so glad that you are having fun at reading so many good books right now 😊😊 They just don’t seem to end! 😉 As always I loved your review. I know what you mean by sometimes slowing down with something when you are enjoying it so much 😊 I do that at times with tv shows or anime series, where I just slow down with the number of episodes that I watch as I don’t want it to end 😊

    1. Oh the ANIME comes into my review comments too 😉😉😂😂you are such a cgi, Michel!!! 😂😂😂😂
      I have no idea what I am saying… 😂😂😂😂

  2. Ma’am you’re so efficient. You’re giving 2 reviews a day. You’re utterly a first reader, hats off, whereas posting a review for me once in a week is difficult. I wanna be like you too. Teach me please

  3. Oooh! Your review makes me want to quickly download this one and start reading. It sounds very thrilling. You’re a great salesperson (even if you aren’t trying to be!) Great review, Shalini. Another to add to my TBR list. 🙂

    1. This was great…. Except for the ending… I literally wailed at the ending… If I am going to be a salesperson, then I would like to be Leslie Georgeson’s 😉😉😘😘❤️❤️ always and forever baby

  4. I fear I am going to have to stop reading your reviews – you are killing my TBR. I want everything you mention!

  5. Haha! I know, I’m terrible at marketing, not to mention I don’t have much time in between family and work and trying to squeeze in writing whenever I can. I don’t know how other authors do it all. They must be super humans–or The Flash! My problem is I feel like I’m begging if I ask people to check out a book, and I’m not a beggar. (That’s probably the wrong attitude, as we all know the squeaky wheel is the one that gets the grease. LOL) I should probably hire you to market everything for me. You would be AMAZING! 🙂

    1. I did some marketing for an author, so I do have some idea. Yp let me think about it, and get back to you on how I want to market the Dregs!!! It’s not about begging, it is about requesting gently… 😉😉😘😘

  6. Your review makes me want to read it. But I feel like I have been reading a lot of books where kids are dying. Maybe somewhere next year. Thanks for the review!

  7. Lovely review Shalini! While I’m glad you enjoyed this one too I’m completely surprised it’s your first by her. I’m up to five and you really can’t go wrong with any. 🙂

  8. Fantastic review!!! I love that you were sneak reading this at work—I’ve been there!!! Kathryn Croft is a favorite of mine, but I do know what you mean about the ending!!! Still—loved this one!

  9. Amazing review, Shalini! I missed out on getting an ARC of this book ebacsue I am trying to cut back on NetGalley but your review has me convinced that I need to read this one. Glad to hear that you enjoyed it despite the ending not being all that.

  10. Awesome review, Shalini! Totally nailed it and sorry the conclusion disappointed. SOOO hate when the ending disappoints. I always want to get in and help the author with the solutions, answer questions, and ***fix*** it! 😜

    1. Hahaha… I didn’t want to fix it.. I tried magic, even that gave up on me… How’s that for Sunday evening/Monday midnight whimsical?!!!

  11. Wonderful review Shalini. What a book! Twice! I am hooked for sure.It is too bad the ending didn’t measure up, but it still got 4 stars and you love it and it loved you back. What a recommendation. Definitely on my list.
