My review

The book had me so excited to begin with. I loved knowing about Blinney Lane and its residents who were cursed. The story had Sarah liking the delivery man Henry, and her usual routine life of managing the book store, but unable to leave Blinney Lane. Enter her nephew Ricky and things change when Ricky opens the forbidden book case to give the Weeping book to Shelby. Lo and behold, the next day, she is coma. Sarah and Ricky then have to save Shelby by magical means.

The story till this point was exciting and fun. I got to know both the past and the present events. Sarah, as the strict aunt, had her moments of seriousness and joviality. Ricky was insolent at times, I couldn’t force myself to care about him much. I guess he was a typical teenager.

The other residents of Blinney Lane were more thrilling. I would have loved to know their stories, hopefully in the next few books. The story had a plot within a plot with both curse of Blinney Lane and the secret of Farwin Woods making its presence felt.

My first book by author Drea Damara, I liked the way the entire town of Blinney Lane and Farwin Woods were described along with its people and creatures. I loved stroomphblutels. (What are they? You have to read the book to know that)

Then came my niggles, the plot lost its way, the pace slowed down, the characters behaved weirdly.

But the book still managed to hold my interest and I could finish it in a few hours. Overall an enjoyable read.

My rating : 3.5 stars

  1. Stroomphblutels? 🤔🤔 That’s one of the weirdest but at the same time most intriguing names that I have heard for what I think are some type of creatures in a while.
This is definitely a book I would be interested in reading, and 3 stars certainly doesn’t sound bad. Wonderful review Shalini! 😊😊😊

    1. Thank you so much, stroomphblutels are cute rest of creatures not so much. There is a history behind this word to be revealed in the interview

  2. Great review Shalini. Glad you still enjoyed this one despite the few issues. I don’t usually read this genre but I am curious about this one and the town and the its residents. Plus stroomphblutels, whatever that means 😀

    1. Hahaha town residents were all cursed, so they were all varied and fun… Stroomphblutels are creatures in Farwin woods… Good fun in the first half

  3. Right? The past and present narrations was completely amazing! I love how it was then presented. I’d still be looking forward for the next ones. Still not abandoning this world created. It’s lovely.

Shalini, you nailed this review btw!

  4. I also wondered what a stroomphblutel was until I read the previous comments. I am trying to move out of my comfort zone and try more fantasy, this one sounds like it might be one to fit the bill. I will watch for your upcoming interview.

Awesome to see you here. Let's chat.
