Many thanks to Anne Cater and Random Things Tours for my spot on this Blog Tour.

A haunting poetry in prose was how I would describe author Katherine Arden’s writing. The words produced a powerful imagery. I hardly could get out of the atmosphere of Russia as created by the author. This was my weekend read where I savored each word by the author. Brilliance shone through as I turned the pages.

Vasya was back in the midst of things, when Moscow was burning and people needed answers, and she was the one on whom their fury was directed, thanks to the hate-filled words of priest, Father Konstantin. Vasya escaped from the burning cage to the realm of a demon with a little help from Bear (he was back!!) but had to return back when the demons raged and tried to destroy her land. Her people, her friends needed her. Moscow needed her. And she had to answer the call which echoed in her blood. She was a witch, after all.

Third book by the author, this was the perfect culmination of the trilogy. Folk tales weaved into the story added a twist in the tale. Characters were darker, the story was alit with the lovable ones, shades were shown as none remained truly monstrous.

Vasya was the heart of the story, her determination and refusal to die at the hands of hatred, her desperate need to save her people drove her on. The author’s writing made her larger than life, inspiring but real too. She was the one to whom my eyes were drawn to.

Emotions, friends, family, love religion, faith and folklore, old and new, myth and real, this book encompassed all that and touched me with a thrill where the strands of magic and Vasya kept me stuck to the story from beginning to end.

A captivating way to spend my weekend.

I received a free ARC from NetGalley and publisher, and this is my journey into its pages, straight from the heart!! STRICTLY HONEST AND UNBIASED.

Born in Texas, Katherine studied French and Russian at Middlebury College. She has lived abroad in France and in Moscow, among other places. She has also lived in Hawaii, where she wrote much of The Bear and the Nightingale. She currently lives in Vermont

Following their adventures in The Bear and the Nightingale and The Girl in the Tower, Vasya and Morozko return in this stunning conclusion to the bestselling Winternight Trilogy, battling enemies mortal and magical to save both Russias, the seen and the unseen.

Now Moscow has been struck by disaster. Its people are searching for answers—and for someone to blame. Vasya finds herself alone, beset on all sides. The Grand Prince is in a rage, choosing allies that will lead him on a path to war and ruin. A wicked demon returns, stronger than ever and determined to spread chaos. Caught at the center of the conflict is Vasya, who finds the fate of two worlds resting on her shoulders. Her destiny uncertain, Vasya will uncover surprising truths about herself and her history as she desperately tries to save Russia, Morozko, and the magical world she treasures. But she may not be able to save them all.

  1. I agree with all of this review, Shalini. The quality of the writing is stunning and it is a great end to the trilogy. I found the plot a bit up and down, so for that reason I enjoyed the second book more, but it is still an exceptional read.

  2. This was a great trilogy. I enjoyed Katherine Arden’s writing very much. I did like the second book better, but this was a great conclusion to the series. Nice review.
