MY REVIEW

Male rape or a drunken misdemeanor. What was it? This book dealt with that topic explosively where my heart broke completely when I read the last line of the book. Author Kia Abdullah turned the story around.

My second book in the Zara the brave series, an attorney who dealt mainly with female abuse, but couldn’t refuse when Kamran came to her for help.

Make no mistake, it was a legal thriller where the good fight was fought in the courtroom, but the author sensitively portrayed the repercussions of culture and upbringing and what was expected from boys and girls. Her main character was Zara the brave but kept within human limits, even while facing danger to life.

In the rest of the story, what I especially liked was that the author took me to the edge and didn’t allow her judgment and beliefs to coat the story. I had to make my own.

There were times I was so frustrated because she wanted me to see the world she was portraying, read between the lines without a bias. And I so wanted a bias. I wanted to scream at the characters, making them all wrong, but they weren’t. They just had their own boundaries.

The story went through the ‘he said and he said’ and how the society and media reacted. I listened to more than 60% of the book in audio format, and I loved Tania Rodriguez, who made the story come alive.

Only my intense need to get to the verdict made me switch over to the ebook. All I could say at the end was – it was brilliant. I would read this author any time. She touched my heart with her stories.
