Storm and London are devastated after the loss of their son, Charlie. Both are struggling to deal with everyday life. Then Storm has a strange experience at Charlie’s favorite playground, he realizes there may be a way to contact his son’s spirit. Armed with a Ouija board and hope, Storm goes to the park in the middle of the night and makes contact with an entity that he believes is Charlie. But as strange and disturbing things begin to happen around their home, London begins to suspect it isn’t their sweet boy. Has Charlie returned home? Or have they welcomed an evil spirit into their lives?

It all happened in an instant.

One minute, he was on top of the world, the king of the mountain. He finally did it— climbed all the way to the very tip-top of the jungle gym. Charlie was so proud of himself sitting there looking out over the playground. The children playing on the swings, the slides, the merry-go-round, the teeter-totters. All were good to play on, but nothing was as exciting as climbing to the top of the jungle gym. Only big, brave kids did that. And little Charlie Benson did it at only five years old.

Then his friend Robert Freeman dared him to stand up.

Charlie didn’t want to. But the rule was simple: You gotta; it’s a dare. Otherwise, you were chicken. And Charlie refused to be a chicken. As slowly and as carefully as he could, Charlie stood balancing precariously on the slippery bars.

For one moment, he was ecstatic. This was way better than just sitting. He felt big and tall and very impressive. He was brave! Maybe the bravest kid in Oak Grove, in all of Arkansas. He hoped Daddy could see him.

Then Mrs. Freeman shouted at him. “Oh my God, Charlie!”

The little boy turned toward the benches where the adults sat.

A terrible shudder ran through the bars. Someone jumped onto the jungle gym, sending an earthquake up the structure. Charlie’s heart beat faster. His feet slipped out from under him. He yelled, pawing at bars. But try as he might he couldn’t get a hold.

Charlie fell. He bumped once against the bars. Then he was weightless. He caught a glimpse of the ground as he rushed toward it.

A terrible burst of pain ruled his world for half a second before vanishing. He heard screams as the summer day went dark.

And in another second the screams went silent.

  1. Ouija board and spirits… I am too chicken for this one. It sounds interesting though. Thanks for sharing, Shalini.
