My review

The book had strange powers. I saw the shadowy tendrils arise from it in an insidious manner, swirl slowly, taking a careful whiffs around, and then ensaring me, pulling me towards it till I was addicted to reading the book. Such was the power of Heidi Perks’ Now You See Her

The story revolved around a child Alice, her mother Harriet, and the neighbor/friend Charlotte. The three formed the main crux of the story. Harriet had to attend a day course on the day of the fête, so Charlotte was minding Alice for the day. Waiting for the kids to finish their rides, she took her eyes off them and glanced into her phone (as most of us do), and Alice disappeared from the fête.. POOF. No clues, no reasons… Just a strange disappearance. The mystery starts, and the pages start rolling.

I liked the way the author Heidi Perks had written the plot, it involved strange dynamics between Harriet and Charlotte. Are they friends? Aren’t they? They met up, they spoke, but did they really know each other? Harriet’s husband Brian too behaved oddly towards Charlotte. Did losing a child make him go off balance? Or was it something more?

Heidi Parks with her sublime mysterious writing, did not allow me to breathe. I kept leaving my other work to return to this novel. The suspense of wanting to know what happened to the child was too high...

Once the cops made their appearance, there was a distinct tremble of secrets in the air which ripped the characters to act and react. Human nature was described in turns where friends show sympathy initially then doubts followed by avoidance. Both the families were ripped apart. Charlotte’s guilt at losing the child was palpable throughout the book.

But it was Harriet that my eyes were drawn to, she intrigued me, an over protective mother who had never been away from her child for even thirteen hours was away from her for thirteen days. Her husband Brian too showed his caring in various ways, some of them were a bit too close to be comfort. There was something very disturbing in the aura between them all. And that trapped me into the book….

Now You See Her caused nobody to see me for the day, till I finished the book, and the tendrils released me, with a shock, literally making me fall on my ass, wondering —Wow what did I read just now!!

I received an ARC from NetGalley and publisher Random House UK, Cornerstone, and this is my honest and unbiased opinion.

My rating : 4 stars

Book blurb

Charlotte is looking after her best friend’s daughter the day she disappears. She thought the little girl was playing with her own children. She swears she only took her eyes off them for a second.

Now, Charlotte must do the unthinkable: tell her best friend Harriet that her only child is missing. The child she was meant to be watching.

Devastated, Harriet can no longer bear to see Charlotte. No one could expect her to trust her friend again.
Only now she needs to. Because two weeks later Harriet and Charlotte are both being questioned separately by the police. And secrets are about to surface.

  1. Sounds very mysterious! I like books that almost seem to have separate stories from different character perspectives that all converge in a thrilling conclusion! 💖👍

          1. On my way home right now. 😕 It was just a short mini break… If you can call it a break! Ha ha! But, it’ll be nice to go home and see my little fur baby… Although, it means back to work tomorrow. 😣😖

          2. Yikessss you are really DEVILESS with fur baby as your familiar. And the cat adopted you… Sounds scary and mysterious now that we think about it

          3. Hahaha are you really Nicole the DEVILESS? You don’t get scared… We are scared of you 😉😉😂😂

      1. I’m glad you’re recovering! Watching TV, reading or looking at nature might help things 🙂

I’m good ^.^ Was busy trying to finish a mythology book bundle for a blog tour.

          1. 1 prequel and 2 novels took me like, maybe 2 weeks. And yes, managed to finish reading and reviewing it a little past the recommended deadline! Looks like I’m paying for all these ‘free’ books with my time, haha.

  2. I love your reviews, Shalini. They’re so incitable and when you’ve enjoyed the book you make me want to run out and get it!!

I love books that I can’t wait to get back to. Question: why 4 and not 5 stars? Was it the ending? Four stars is still a great rating, but I’m just curious.

    Thanks for reviewing this. 😊

    1. 4 stars because I guessed what was happening in last 30 %.
      Laurie I found you…
Hahaha I hadn’t lost you, but I didn’t know how to find you. And then I did. Confused you?
I found your like here, I went to your blog to find the contact sheet, I couldn’t find one, went to Twitter, couldn’t find you even with the handle. Twitter and me don’t get along. Then I mailed you, but I am not sure what happened to the mail. Then your message here. So I found you
You are the only amongst friends remaining to be mailed
Would you like to sign up as a blog tour host. I started blog tour services. Sorry asking you directly. Please it is an invitation you can RSVP either ways.

  3. Oh. I see.

I’m glad you found me, Shalini. I didn’t realize I’m so hard to track down. I’d better fix that. 🤦🏽‍♀️

Congrats on the blog tour services. That’s great! I would have loved to be on the blog tour, but unfortunately I’m so behind on other reviews, etc. that I can’t squeeze this in at the moment. Life got really crazy and I fell behind and feel quite overwhelmed at present. I’m sorry. 😔 I feel like such a loser right now.

    1. Hey Laurie chill… It doesn’t have to be only reviews, it can be a chapter post excerpt post or just an announcement of a book. When you can’t do a review, do a promo post or an author interview. I am okay with that too. Kindly let me know so that I can include you in my mail list.

      1. 😂😂….Okay, Shalini. I can’t make any promises, but you can add me to the list and I’ll let you know on a case by case basis if I can contribute.
I’ve been trying to put together my own giveaway for about two and a half months now. And let’s not even talk about all of the tags I’ve neglected to get around to. See??!! 🤦🏽‍♀️

        1. Yikessss you are a busy woman aren’t you? I would send you mails, if possible then do it. Otherwise it’s all fine. I would just feel good that I have people to mail😂😂

  4. Hi Shalini, this may be a bit random but I’m hoping you can help me – I recently read this book on holiday and accidentally left it. For a course I am doing I need to know the number of chapters in the book but I can’t find it online anywhere – do you know how many chapters there are?
    Thanks for your help!!
