My review

Oh how do i review a book that I am so ambiguous about??

The story goes like this; two sisters Megan and Cloe, lose their parents to a car accident, they inherit everything and come to their vacation cottage at Whitecliff, Cornwall. It starts with Megan receiving a postcard from Z. Is Z their long lost brother, Zachariah /Zac.. Is he alive?? Is he safe?? Where has he been in all these years?? That starts the ball rolling from London to Cornwall.

Megan, at 20 yrs of age, is a difficult person to like, she is brash, abrupt, rude at times. She is a little disturbed, dealing with anorexia and her mother’s words ringing in her ears in every situation, does not help her condition or her mental status. But she will do anything to know the answer to her brother’s disappearance. She takes chances, risks, some of them do pay off.

Cloe, on the other hand, at 17, is quiet, easy going and does not want to know what happened to her brother because sometimes truth is scarier than pretense.

The relationship between the sisters is sometimes warm but mostly strained and awkward as they have never lived together. They have kept in touch via the social platforms during their boarding school phase. So, seeing them interact was both refreshing and painful. There is loyalty yet a strange distance between them.

There are other characters who make an appearance throughout the story : neighbors, Alison and Dan (didn’t they have a son??? Where is he??), the bar owner Pete (what’s his secret?), his fisherman son Scott (is he a bully??), Scott’s wife, Chris’s ie (what’s her connection to Zac??). Surfer boy, Luke, vacationer kids like Brad, Mia, George and other locals like Vee, Gwen play their part in surrounding the village in mystery and intrigue. There is a strange pulsatile darkness emerging from all of them. The more Megan pushes with her questions, the harder the village residents resist till her back is to the wall. Then there are only two choices; run or fight. Chloe wants to run…

What does Megan do, does she run or fight? Is her need for answers more important than her sister?? That’s what the latter half of the book answers.

Kerry Wilkinson writes well. There is mystery and suspense. He takes a flawed young adult, filled with attitude and resentment, puts her right in the midst of an unfriendly village and then settles back, to see her finding her answers. .. She is quite a swashbuckling hero in the last few pages, with lots of action… Its a good book overall, with a great plot line but oh, so difficult to like the main character.

I received an ARC from NetGalley and publisher Bookouture and this is my honest and unbiased review.

My rating : 4 stars

About the Author

Despite two national newspaper reports to the contrary, Kerry Wilkinson is male. Honestly.

His debut, Locked In, the first title in the detective Jessica Daniel series, was written as a challenge to himself but became a UK Number One Kindle bestseller within three months of release. His three initial Jessica Daniel books made him Amazon UK’s top-selling author for the final quarter of 2011. When Think of the Children followed in 2013, he became the first formerly self-published British author to have an ebook No.1 and reach the top 20 of the UK paperback chart.

Kerry has a degree in journalism, plays cricket badly and complains about the weather a lot. He was born in Somerset but now lives in Lancashire, so the weather gripes.

Book Blurb

They told us he had been missing for nearly two days, that he probably drowned. They told us a lie.Megan was ten years old when her older brother, Zac, went missing among the cliffs, caves and beaches that surround the small seaside town of Whitecliff. A decade later and a car crash has claimed the lives of her parents.Megan and her younger sister Chloe return to Whitecliff, the first time since their brother’s disappearance.

Megan has come to confront her family’s past after receiving a postcard on the day of her parents’ funeral. It had a photograph of Whitecliff on the front and a single letter on the back.

‘Z’ is all it read. Z for Zac.

    1. Yes.. But it was an ok read Tami.. But Kerry has written well. I cudnt relate to main character.. But that’s purely me… But whole story plot line was good

  1. So it seems like you liked the story, but maybe it was a bit contrived relative to other books the author has put out there in the past? Is that a reasonable take on this? I love books that hit with something I never saw coming (And I’m not just talking about The Cat in the Hat, but on that note, who really could have predicted that they actually would manage prior to Mother’s return???). I also respect a good bittersweet ending that makes your heart ache. What is your all time favorite read ever or at least what are a few of the finalists? I love picking up a book that a true book nerd adores. That is high praise by the way – book nerds are the absolute best people in the universe. 🙂 Love the post!!

    1. Story was ok but it wasn’t a thriller. There was a just a little mystery but I couldn’t relate to main character. I like a psychological thriller where I can’t see the ending.
Sometimes I lie by Alice Feeney was one such book gave me goosebumps.. Read it in Feb

      1. adding to my kindle now….correction…ordering used paperback bc the other options aren’t as good now…

      1. There are so many. Any suggestions regarding a good place to start on the MR reads? Also I’m like you. I can’t fully accept characters to whom I cannot relate or those seeming utterly implausible.

        1. Contest his first book absolute thriller my fav I loved loved loved that book father +child stuck in library along with aliens, contest = person last alive let out of library. Absolute thriller.. His main characters in other books scarecrow, Jack West are to die for

      1. You are a brilliant writer. We just have different styles. I am Lady Gaga. You are Adele. We both rock in our own incredible ways! 😉

          1. We always want another’s Adele or Gaga. I think it’s the curse of being a woman, or maybe it’s a human thing. I, too, dream of being an Adele.

    1. Just ordered Contest and Sometimes I Lie. I also ordered a book I loved a zillion years ago that is now out of print. It was recommended to me by a fellow book nerd. Hallucinating Foucalt by Patricia Duncker. I can’t remember it at all and that just makes me sad. If you happen to get it and it stinks, big fat apologies in advance! I remember that it was more introspective and deep versus normal sci-fi or mystery, but that is the extent of my cerebral memory card storage on that one. I do adore a good book. I also loved the book Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ’s Childhood Pal. It is incredibly funny and yet bittersweet and heartwrenching. Even though we all know how the tale ends, it was a spectacular read. Again – these may be way out of your preferred genre. I just love remembering books that struck a magical chord within me.

  2. /Did you follow both my empty out blog and my lf blog? I wrorte a post about it if you’re interested in follow my blog

    1. Ooooh thank you so much for your kind words..
