Book Review - Wild Rising & Wild Refuge by K. Panikian #BookReview #BookBlogger #urbanfantasy

Blurb of Book 1

“My name is Sienna Wilder and up until about age 12, I thought I was human.”

From a young age, Sienna learned to control the savage creature that raged in her heart. Swearing never to unleash the puma again, she kept her head down, her emotions level, and she survived.

Inside though, she yearned to find a place where she could roam free. Landing her dream job as a park ranger at Yellowstone, Sienna thinks she’s finally found it, only to discover that she’s not the only one with a secret beast. Now, women are disappearing and no one is paying attention. Sienna must discover the truth or she may be next. Can she learn to trust her wild side in time to save herself and the others?

My Review of Book 1

A puma shifter story, Sienna captured my heart in ways I couldn’t believe would be possible. At 157 pages it packed a punch. There was something so endearing about her that she kept me completely engrossed in the story.

She was strong and clever, a shifter  who had so much to learn, having been an orphan most of her life. Working as a ranger in Yellowstone was her dream come true as she belonged to no pack and wanted to live free. A series of women disappearing caught her attention, so also an alpha of big cats.

My first book by author N. Panikian, and oh my, I was so into this book. I loved the way Sienna slowly came into her own, with a few shifter friends to help. The writing showed me how different she was and and I loved how she slowly embraced her wild self.

A few things niggled me too. The writing could have been stronger. with more passion in it. Using a word repetitively did not make a narrative strong, quite the opposite. Some facts like the sense of smell which she said was bad but turned out to be quite powerful later on. Such things felt to be asynchronous.

In the long run, it didn’t matter. Because the author cunningly put in the alpha at the right places. The first time Sienna met August. the heat in that meeting reminded me of Kate Daniels and Curran, not as perfect as them, but close. That made me love the book more and forget about the few flaws.

The murder mystery was an added bonus. There were two of them. Overall, a book I quite enjoyed, then quickly downloaded book 2.

If you like shifter stories, give it a go. I am sure you would enjoy it.

Blurb of Book 2

When she discovers she isn’t human, Sienna Wilder conceals her gifts from the packs and the alphas who lead them. But she’s not a scared kid anymore. Is it time to stop hiding and fight for what she wants?

After learning to control her puma shifting abilities, Sienna, a Yellowstone Park Ranger, finds peace for the first time in her life. Only someone from her past is back under suspicious circumstances, and the competing packs that surround her home are threatening open war.

When the fires start, Sienna knows that she must intervene, even if it risks exposure of her rare power. If she doesn’t figure out the hidden connections, she may lose everything. But is the truth worth her freedom?

My Review of Book 2

Book two was much more enjoyable where I had fun following Sienna’s rise to control her inner Beast. The story was slightly slower than the earlier one, but it was rounded up pretty neatly. I liked how her relationship with the Jackson Hole alpha August was strengthened, and the rogue shifters of book1 had a neat ending.

The author N. Panikian’s writing was smoother, though it could be still sharpened a bit more so that the book had an edge over the others. Still I would put it as a solid 4.25 stars. It would be nice to see how Sienna managed her still-shaky trust and bring to the forefront her need to protect everyone, shifter and animal, in the Yellowstone.

Book 3 ought to be a great ride, if the author continued with her series.

I loved it
4/5
